Abstract

PURPOSE:To perform with high accuracy a toxicity test of a highly volatile matter against aquatic life by repeating successively an operation where a living thing is put into a number of sealed vessels and a part of water that runs out of the first vessel is diluted with constant ratio and the diluted one is made to flow into next vessel. CONSTITUTION:Sterilized water is supplied under gravity from a water tank, that keeps a constant water level, equipped with a heater 3, a lamp 5 for sterilization, an air aupply pipe 4 and a water supply pipe 2 through a pipe 6, to a number of sealed vessels 7a-7e, via valves 9a-9e and inlet float meters 10a-10e. In each of tanks 7a-7e samples such as fish for testing are contained and in the tank 7a only water is supplied. Further, a part of water that runs out of the tank 7a is subjected to mixing 11 with a chemical liquid containing highly volatile substance and the resultant solution having a fixed concentration, is supplied to the tank 7b from the bottom part of the tank. A part of water that runs out of the tank 7b is diluted with constant ratio by water from a pipe 8c and sent to the tank 7c. Through said process, by flowing water continuously with various kinds of stated concentrations, toxicity testing etc., of a volatile substance against aquatic life are performed precisely with a simple device without volatilization of a volatile substance.
