Abstract

The apparatus includes a plurality of extrudes (10, 110) which feed parallel ribbons (20, 120) of raw material along refractory rollers (35, 135) through successive chambers (30, 32) in a kiln and through an annealing lehr (80) to a cutting zone. The surfaces of the raw material (20, 120) are coated on three sides with a parting agent and on the side to be exposed, with a glaze or left uncoated. The firing chamber (32) of the kiln has opposed rows of burners (40) directed toward opposing ports (42). The rollers (35, 135, 36, 136) protrude through side walls and are supported on circumferentially spaced wheels (70a, 70b, 70c). Wheels (73a, 73b) synchronize the rollers. Manifold (56) connects the firing chamber (32) with the preheating chamber (30). The process uses a mixture of a small amount of soluble carbonaceous material and water with either a clay or silica charge to adjust the composition. Clay may be extruded as ribbons coated with parting agent and glaze, then fired, preheated, sintered above 20000 DEG F, and annealed. Cellulated vitreous clay products are then cut. A silica charge with a silica sand surface may be pressed with a material to form plates, and them fired in the kiln to form a cellulated, vitreous product. Consumable, sectional trays are also disclosed.
