Abstract
A method and apparatus for high volume distillation of impure liquid, particularly of binary mixtures of relatively low boiling organic substances and water, comprises fractionally distilling (12) the impure liquid to form a vapor; compressing (16) the vapor; passing at least a portion of the compressed vapor through a vapor composition adjustment zone (17) to react or merely stabilize following compression; compressing (24) the vapor exiting the adjustment zone (17); cooling (14) the resulting vapor in heat transfer relation with the impure liquid; and collecting (112) the condensate. In various embodiments of the invention the vapor exiting the adjustment zone (17) may be expanded through an expansion engine (20) and/or a portion of the compressed vapor may bypass (50) the adjustment zone (17) and/or expansion engine (20). The method and apparatus are particularly suitable for producing substantially anhydrous ethyl alcohol from EtOH-H<u2>uO binary systems derived from the fermentation of honey solutions. Honey may be produced in large volumes in environmental controlled structures (72) containing vegetation, hives and bees which are associated with automated means (76) for harvesting accumulated honey.
