Thermionic amplifiers and detectors. - An unloaded aerial G is connected directly to the grid and filament of a high-frequency amplifier or detector valve, the tuning of the system being effected by means of the intervalve transformer. A main tuning condenser D and a vernier condenser D<1> are shunted across the primary B' of the transformer B, whilst similar condensers D<2>, D<3> tune the secondary coil B<2>. The output from the second valve A' is back-coupled at B<3> to the transformer winding. Additional inductances b' - - b<6> may take the place of the transformer as shown in Fig. 2 alternate coils being left opencircuited, or earthed as indicated in dotted lines. This arrangement is stated to eliminate atmospheric disturbances and to enhance selectivity. In a modified arrangement the first valve has a tuned plate circuit, the inductance coil of which is coupled to a resistance coil in the plate circuit of the second valve.
