Abstract

The invention relates to a vehicle gearbox for transverse engines, especially a five-speed gearbox. The input shaft (2) of the gearbox has non-rotatable gears (11-16), which engage gears (17, 18, 19, 23, 24) on two intermediate shafts (3, 4) which are parallel to the input shaft. The gears on the intermediate shafts are freely rotatably mounted and can be coupled to the shafts by means of engaging sleeves (21, 22, 25). The intermediate shafts each has a non- rotatably fixed gear (7, 8) which engages the crown wheel (9) of the differential and functions as a pinion drive, the gears (7, 8) being fixed on the ends of the intermediate shafts directed towards the input end of the input shaft. Gears (13, 28) and an additional sliding gear (not shown) provide for reverse drive. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Vehicle gearbox The present invention relates to a gearbox for motor vehicles, comprising an input shaft with a number of gears non-rotatably fixed to the shaft, a first intermediate shaft arranged parallel to the input shaft with a number of gears which engage the gears on the input shaft, are freely rotatably journalled on the intermediate shaft and can be non-rotatably coupled by coupling means to the intermediate shaft, and an output gear non-rotatably fixed to the intermediate shaft, a second intermediate shaft arranged parallel with the input shaft and with a number of gears which engage gears on the input shaft, are freely rotatably journalled on the intermediate shaft and can be non-rotatably coupled by coupling means to the intermediate shaft, and an output gear non-rotatably fixed to the intermediate shaft, the two output gears non-rotatably fixed to the respective intermediate shafts engaging a common gear.
Gearboxes, in which the releasable gears are mounted on an intermediate shaft instead of on the output shaft, are used in front wheel drive vehicles and in vehicles with rear engines. Usually the engine and transmission are built together in a drive unit which has a gearbox and final drive with differential in a common housing. The output gear non-rotatably fixed to the intermediate shaft engages the crown wheel of the differential and functions as the pinion. In such a design, the intermediate shaft thus also functions as an output shaft.
These gearboxes of known type are relatively long, i.e. they are long in the axial direction, and are therefore not especially suited for use in motor vehicles in which the engine has several cylinders in a row and is placed transversely to the vehicle, due to the problem of space for the gearbox.
Further it is known to provide a gearbox with two intermediate shafts each having an output gear engaging a common gear on an output shaft, which is arranged in a conventional manner with its rotational axis coinciding with the rotational axis of the input shaft.
In this type of gearbox all shafts are arranged in a common plane. By this arrangement it is possible to increase the number of gear speeds in a gearbox for a conventional engine installation from, for example, four speeds to six speeds without extending the length of the gearbox. However, this type of gearbox is not suitable for motor vehicles having a transversely mounted engine.
The purpose of the present invention is generally to achieve a gearbox of the type described in the introduction, which is especially suited for use in motor vehicles with transverse engines which only leave a very limited space for the gearbox at the end of the engine. Particularly, the purpose is to achieve a five-speed gearbox for transverse engines.
This is achieved according to the invention when said output gears are fixed on shaft ends directed towards the input end of the input shaft, one of the intermediate shafts being disposed in a plane separated from a plane common to the input shaft, and the other intermediate shaft and said output gears engaging a common gear disposed excentrically of the input shaft.
A five-speed gearbox in this embodiment, for example, need be no longer than a threespeed gearbox. Furthermore all of the forward speeds are obtained with two gear steps, which provides relatively high efficiency and a quiet gearbox. By having different gear ratios between the respective output gears and the common gear (the crown wheel), larger steps between the gear speeds are possible, providing the possibility of obtaining better fuel economy and performance than with a conventional gearbox.
The invention will be described below in more detail with reference to the examples shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 shows a schematic end view of a five-speed gearbox, Figure 2 shows a longitudinal section along the line ll-ll in Fig. 1, Figure 3 shows a schematic end view of an alternative embodiment of a five-speed gearbox according to the invention, and Figure 4 shows a longitudinal section along the line IV-IV in Fig. 3.
The gearbox shown in Figs. 1 and 2 has a housing 1 in which an input shaft 2, a first intermediate shaft 3 and a second intermediate shaft 4 are rotatably mounted. The housing 1 is constructed together with a housing 5 containing the final drive with differential 6.
Each intermediate shaft 3,4 carries a gear 7 and 8 respectively, which is non-rotatably fixed to its shaft and engages the crown wheel 9 of the differential and which thus forms the pinion of the final drive.
The input shaft 2 of the gearbox is driven by the engine (not shown) via a conventional friction clutch with disc 1 0. Six gears 11, 12, 13, 14, 1 5 and 1 6 are non-rotatably mounted on the shaft 2. The gears 11, 15 and 16 engage gears 17, 1 8 and 19, which are freely rotatably mounted on the intermediate shaft 3 and have engaging teeth 20. A pair of engaging sleeves 21, 22 are non-rotatably' but axially displaceably mounted on the shaft 3, so that gears 17, 1 8 and 1 9 can be selectively coupled to the shaft 3 in a conventional manner. In a corresponding manner, the gears 12, 14 of the input shaft engage gears 23, 24 (with engaging teeth) which are freely rotatably mounted on the second intermediate shaft 4.The gears 23, 24 can be selectively coupled to the intermediate shaft 4 with the aid of an axially displaceable engaging sleeve 25.
Engagement of the respective gear positions by displacing the engaging sleeves in done in the usual manner after disengaging the clutch between the engine and the gearbox. Gear positions one to five are thus obtained by locking the gears 23, 24, 17, 1 8 and 1 9 in said order to the respective shaft.
The gearbox has a reverse gear arrangement comprising a separate intermediate shaft 26 which carries a reverse drive 27, which is axially displaceable into and out of engagement with the gear 1 3 on the input shaft and a ring gear 28 non-rotatably fixed to the engaging sleeve 25. Thus in the reverse position, the torque is transmitted from the gear 1 3 to the ring gear 28 via the reverse drive 27 thus reversing the rotational direction of the intermediate shaft 4.
In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the pinion drive 7 and 8 respectively on the intermediate shafts are of the same size, and therefore the gear ratios in the different gear steps are determined by the gear ratios between the input shaft 2 and the intermediate shaft 3, 4.
Figs. 3 and 4 show an alternative embodiment of a five-speed gearbox according to the invention, in which the number of gears has been able to be reduced by providing the intermediate shafts with differently sized pinion drives 30 and 31. The input shaft no longer requires individual gears for each gear on the intermediate shafts; rather its gears 1 2 and 14 engage pairs of equal sized gears 32 and 33 on the intermediate shafts. Otherwise there are no structural differences between the two embodiments shown with the exception that the gearbox in the alternative embodiment is somewhat shorter axially which is an advantage.
