Description

SPECIFICATION Heater device applicable to a fuel filter The present innovation relates to a heater device which is applicable to a fuel filter.
It is well known that the fuel used with Diesel engines contains also small quantities of paraffine. This substance has the disadvantage that it solidifies at low temperatures, in particular at temperatures of less than 0 C, so that it enhances the clogging both of the fuel conduits and the main or secondary filters provided in any feeding system of a Diesel engine.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a device which will allow to avoid the abovementioned disadvantage in a simple and little expensive way.
According to the present innovation there is provided a heater device which is arranged to be used with a fuel filter, characterized inthat it comprises: at least a formable electric resistor and a formable band which is wound around the said resistor and is arranged to be wound around the said filter.
A better understanding of the present innovation will be had when reading the following detailed description of a preferred embodiment of the innovation, given by way of non limiting example, with reference to the annexed drawing in which: Figure 1 is a perspective top view of a heater device according to the teachings of the present innovation and shown as being mounted in an example of application, and Figure 2 is an electric diagram of a control circuit of the device shown in Fig. 1.
Referring now particularly to Fig. 1, reference numeral 1 indicates generally a heater device arranged to be applied to a fuel filter 2. Fuel filter 2 has a substantially cylindrical structure and comprises a lower substantially cup-shaped body 3 closed at its upper portion by a cover 4, the said body and the said cover being formed with conduits 5 and 6 respectively for the discharge and the feeding of the said fuel.
The heater device according to the teachings of the present innovation comprises substantially an electric resistor indicated generally by reference numeral 8 and provided with connection terminals 9 and 10, and a formable band 11 which surrounds the resistor all along its length, leaving free only the terminals 9 and 10. In particular, the band 11 is composed of two plane strips 1 2 and 1 3, respectively, between which the resistor 8 is disposed; the strip 1 3 has in a transversal direction a plurality of teeth 1 4 which are bent on the strip 1 2 so as to obtain a compact band 11.The ends opposed in a longitudinal direction of the strip 1 3 are bent by 90 and give origin to respective tongues 15, 16, each of which has a through hole (not shown) which is engaged by the stem of a bolt 1 7.
resistor 8 and band 11 are made of a plastically deformable material so that the said band 11 may be wound around filters of different diameters and be adapted to the shape of the said filters.
Screwed onto the cup-shaped body 3 of the filter 2 is a thermal switch 1 9 which comprises, in a way which is not shown, a bimetal type switch element which usually is open when the temperature of the filter is higher than for example - 5"C, and is closed when the temperature is lower than the said value.
Extending from the thermal switch 1 9 are two connection cables 21 and 22.
Referring now in particular to Fig. 2, between the terminals 24 and 25, connectable to respective opposed poles of an electric energy source, there are connected two branches in parallel, the first of which comprises in series the bimetallic thermal switch 1 9 and a coil 26 of a relais, and the second comprises in series the resistor 8 and a contact element 27 of the normally open type, which is actuated by the coil 26.
Finally, with reference to Fig. 1, disposed around the band 11 is a strip 1 8 made of a heat insulating material.
The assembly of the heater device 1 is carried out in an extremely simple way by forming the band 11 around the filter 2 and tightening the tongues 1 5 and 1 6 of the band 11 by means of the bolt 1 7. The operation of the device 1 will now be described assuming that the temperature value detected by the thermal switch 1 9 is initially less than - 5"C.
Under such conditions, and with reference to Fig. 2, the thermal switch 1 9 is closed, the coil 26 is activated and consequently the contact element 27 is closed. Therefore, in the resistor 8 and electric current flows which produces the heating of the said resistor 8.
Referring now again to Fig. 1, the heat energy produced by resistor 8 is transmitted to the cup-shaped body 3 of the filter 2 and from this latter to the fuel which flows therein, thereby giving rise to a gradual increase of the temperature, so as to facilitate the dissolution of the particles of paraffine contained in the said fuel. When the temperature value becomes higher than the pre-established minimum value (for example + 5"C), the thermal switch 1 9 opens with the consequent interruption of the feeding to the coil 26 and, through this latter, to the resistor 8. The combined action of the resistor 8 and the thermal switch 1 9 allows anyway to maintain the temperature within the filter 2 above the pre-established minimum value.
From the analyisis of the characteristics of the heater device 1 according to the teachings of the present innovation it may be noted that the said device allows to overcome the abovementioned disadvantages. In particular, the device according to the present innovation is extremely easy to be assembled, and moreover it adapts itself to any type of filter, provided the system of coupling between the tongues 1 5 and 1 6 is eventually changed according to the dimensions of the filter to be heated. The extremely simple structure of the device 1 allows to reduce to a minimum the cost of production of the filter itself, whilst the respective control circuit shown in Fig. 2 allows the device to operate in a completely automatic way.
Finally, it is clear that many modifications and variations may be made to the heater device 1 and the respective electronic circuit, without departing from the scope of the present innovation. For example ample variations may be made to the structure of the filter 2; in particular, the band 11 could be made of a continuous body by means of silicone rubber, and the resistor 8 could be formed by a plurality of resistors in parallel. The control circuit shown in Fig. 2 could be amply modilfied, for example by disposing directly in series the switch 1 9 with the resistor 8, or by replacing the thermal switch 1 9 with a manually operable switch positioned on the dashboard of the motor vehicle. Finally, the heater device 1 may be applied to any fuel filter of a motor vehicle, in particular also to the filter disposed around the suction pipe within the fuel tank of the vehicle. and in any device in which the fuel circulates.
