Description
SPECIFICATION
Wall-plug
The invention relates to a wall-plug with an expanding member which co-operates with a slotted end section of a metal expanding sleeve.
A wall-plug of the type mentioned initially is described for example in Swiss Patent No. 433 671. A disadvantage of this wall-plug is that because of its metal components it is a good conductor for solid-borne vibration.
It is an object of the invention to construct a wall-plug of the type mentioned initially in such a way that in spite of having good fixing properties it has the effect of damping vibration, in order at least to reduce transmission of solid-borne vibration.
The present invention provides a wall-plug with an expanding member which co-operates with a slotted end section of a metal expanding sleeve, characterised in that at least one metal connecting section of the expanding member co-operates with the expanding sleeve by way of a vibrationdamping material, and that the expanding sleeve is provided at least at the end section opposite to the slotted end section with an inner lining of the vibration-damping material projecting beyond the end section.
Owing to the fact that at least a metal connecting section of the expanding member cooperates with the expanding sleeve by way of a vibration-damping material, it is ensured that the mechanical vibration transmitted to the connecting section through the fixing means is not transmitted to the expanding sleeve. On the side of the expanding sleeve remote from the slotted end section an inner lining of the vibrationdamping material which projects beyond the end section also acts as a barrier to the transmission of mechanical vibration. The wall-plug thus combines the outstanding fixing properties of a wall-plug with metal expanding sleeve, and optimum vibration-damping characteristics.
Advantageous embodiments of the wall-plug according to the invention are described in Claims 2to 17.
For simpler applications which are not subjected to heavy load an embodiment suffices in which the expanding member co-operates with the expanding sleeve by way of the vibrationdamping material, whiist advantageously the vibration-damping material is arranged as an inner lining of the slotted end section beyond which it projects. To improve the holding of the expanding member in the expanding sleeve, the slots in the slotted end section of the expanding sleeve are each closed at the end by means of a connectingpiece acting as a breakage point.
Preferably, in the case of heavier loads, the expanding member has a body made of the vibration-damping material, and embedded in the body there are a tapered metal sleeve cooperating with the expanding sleeve and, arranged at a distance from the tapered sleeve in an axial direction, the metal connecting part.
Advantageously, the expanding member has a cylindrical part with axial ribs which engage in the slots of the slotted end section of the expanding sleeve. Such an embodiment guarantees on the one hand a certain stability of the expanding member in the expanding sleeve during storage, transport and handling of the wall-plug, and on the other hand the expanding member is guided in the expanding sleeve so that uniform tightening of the expanding member is ensured when the wall-plug is fixed. These characteristics are further improved if the tapered sleeve has a cylindrical sleeve section which extends over at least part of the length of the cylindrical part of the expanding member and, especially is provided with an outer layer of the vibration-damping material.In such an arrangement, the cylindrical section of the tapered sleeve improves the stability and guiding of the expanding member, whilst the outer layer of vibration-damping material helps to prevent accidental detachment of the expanding member from the expanding sleeve.
In an especially preferred embodiment of the wall-plug the connecting section has a tapered outer jacket which preferably corresponds to the tapered inner surface of the tapered sleeve. In such an embodiment, the tapered outer jacket of the connecting section ensures a particularly good transmission of forces to the tapered sleeve.
Advantageously, the minimum outside diameter of the outer jacket of the connecting section is at the most only equal to the minimum inside diameter of the tapered inside surface of the tapered sleeve.
This prevents a lower outer edge of the outer jacket from co-operating with the inner surface of the tapered sleeve. It is similarly also of advantage if the maximum outside diameter of the tapered outer jacket of the connecting section is at least as large as the maximum inside diameter of the tapered inner surface of the tapered sleeve. This prevents an upper outer edge of the outer jacket of the connecting section from co-operating with the inner surface of the tapered sleeve.
In a further possible embodiment of the connecting section in the expanding member, the connecting section has a part which is at least approximately cylindrical and the outside diameter of which is preferably smaller than the minimum inside diameter of the tapered sleeve, and also has a radial flange which an outside diameter which is preferably greater than the maximum inside diameter of the tapered sleeve.
The connecting section may be in the form of the head of a screw, but may advantageously instead be in the form of a nut.
A particularly secure form of the wall-plug is produced if the expanding sleeve is provided with indentations which extend in a longitudinal direction, are distributed over the periphery and are arranged at least partly in the section of the expanding sleeve adjacent to the slotted end section, being preferably offset in a peripheral direction with respect to the slots in the slotted end section. If slightly too large a borehole has been made in a structure and the expanding member can therefore be pulled easily into the slotted end section of the expanding sleeve, the indentations prevent it from being pulled in any further. The result is more secure fixing of the wall-plug and components arranged thereon. This embodiment of the wall-plug also offers in particular security of fixing in the event of a fire breaking out.Even if the vibration-damping material becomes scorched, the indentations ensure that the metal parts of the expanding member are still held by the indentations.
In a preferred embodiment, the expanding sleeve is provided with a roughened surface and/or, especially, with longitudinal grooves, on the outside of the slotted end section. This prevents rotation of the wall-plug in a borehole.
Advantageously, the vibration-damping is a rubber-elastic material. Preferably, the vibrationdamping material has a hardness of from 65 to 95
Shore, more especially 80 Shore.
Advantageous embodiments of the wall-plug according to the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 shows a longitudinal view of a first wall-plug; Fig. 2 shows a longitudinal section through the wall-plug in Fig.
1;
Fig. 3 shows a longitudinal view of a second wall-plug, with one half in section;
Fig. 4 shows a longitudinal view of a third wallplug, with one half in section.
As is shown in Figures 1 and 2, the wall-plug consists of an expanding sleeve 2 which has a slotted end section 4. The slots 6 are each closed at their free end by a weak connecting piece 8 acting as a breakage point. In the section of the expanding sleeve 2 adjoining the slotted end section 4 there are indentations 10 which extend in the longitudinal direction of the expanding sleeve and are distributed over the periphery of the said expanding sleeve. In the example shown, the indentations 10 lie on the extension line of the slots 6. It is also possible, however, for the indentations 10 to be off-set with respect to the slots and for the slots 6 and indentations 10 to overlap one another in a longitudinal direction. At the upper end of the slotted end section 4 the expanding sleeve is provided with a roughened surface 12 which is formed by longitudinal grooves.
The expanding sleeve 2 is provided on the inside with a lining 14 of vibration-damping material. The lining 14 projects beyond the expanding sleeve at the slotted end section 4. The expanding sleeve is rounded off at the inner edge 16 of the slotted end section 4 in order to prevent damage to the lining 14.
The wall-plug also has an expanding member 20 comprising a connecting section 21 which is in the form of a nut with an internal thread 22. The expanding member has a tapered section 24 and a cylindrical section 26. The latter is provided with a roughened surface 28 formed by longitudinal grooves. The expanding member 20 is inserted by its cylindrical section 26 into the slotted end section 4. After the wall-plug has been inserted into a borehole in an object, for example a wall, in order to fix a bbdy a screw connected to the latter is introduced into the wall-plug and screwed into the expanding member 20. By tightening the screw, which is not shown in detail, the expanding member 20 is pulled into the slotted end section 4 and the expanding sleeve 2 is pushed outwards against the walls of the borehole.
The wall-plug shown in Figure 3 contains an expanding sleeve 30 which has a slotted end section 32. The slots 34 are open towards the end. In the section of the expanding sleeve 30 adjoining the slotted end section 32 there are indentations 36 which extend in the longitudinal direction of the expanding sleeve. The indentations 36 are distributed over the periphery of the expanding sleeve. In the example shown, the indentations 36 are flush with the slots 34. It is preferable, however, for the indentations 36 to be off-set in a peripheral direction with respect to the slots 34. It is then also possible for the slots 34 and the indentations 36 partly to overlap one another in a longitudinal direction. At the open end of the slotted end section 32 the expanding sleeve is provided with a roughened surface 38 formed by longitudinal grooves.The roughened surface is intended to prevent rotation of the wallplug in the borehole.
In the end section 40 opposite to the slotted end section 32, the expanding sleeve 30 is provided with an inner lining 42 of vibrationdamping material projecting beyond the end section. The inner lining may be in the form of an insert which is provided with longitudinal grooves 44 in which the indentations 36 engage. The part 46 of the inner lining 42 projecting beyond the expanding sleeve 30 is in the form of a radially projecting flange.
The wall-plug also has an expanding member 48 which is pushed into the expanding sleeve at the slotted end section 32. The expanding member primarily has a body 50 made of vibration-damping material in which are embedded a tapered metal sleeve 52 co-operating with the expanding sleeve 30 and, at a distance therefrom in an axial direction. a metal connecting section 54. The expanding member 48 has a cylindrical section 56 with axial ribs 58 which engage in the slots 34 of the slotted end section of the expanding sleeve. The tapered sleeve 52 also has a cylindrical sleeve section 60 which extends over at least part of the length of the cylindrical section 56 of the expanding member 48 and is provided with an outer layer 62 of the vibrationdamping material.
The connecting section 54 has a tapered outer jacket 64, which preferably corresponds to the tapered inner surface 66 of the tapered sleeve 52.
The minimum outside diameter of the outerjacket 64 of the connecting section 54 is preferably at the most equal to the minimum inside diameter of the inner surface of the tapered sleeve 52. It is furthermore of advantage if the maximum outside diameter of the tapered outer jacket 64 of the connecting section 54 is at least equal to the maximum inside diameter of the tapered inner surface 66 of the tapered sleeve 52. In the present example the connecting section 54 is in the form of a nut with an internal thread 68. A screw (not shown) can be screwed into the connecting section 54 from outside, and when the screw is tightened it pulls the expanding member 48 into the slotted end section 32 of the expanding sleeve 10, pressing the latter against the walls of the borehole which is not shown. At the same time, the screw also serves to fix a component.
Fig. 4 shows a wall-plug which corresponds substantially to the wall-plug in Figure 3, and the same parts are accordingly provided with the same reference numbers.
The inner lining 42 of the expanding sleeve 30 is, however, modified, in that the radially projecting part 70 finishes flush with the outside of the expanding sleeve 30.
The expanding member 48 is modified in that it has a connecting section 72 with a part 74 which is at least approximately cylindrical and has an outside diameter that is preferably smaller than the minimum inside diameter of the tapered sleeve 52. In addition, the connecting section 72 is provided with a radially projecting flange 76 having an outside diameter which is preferably greater than the maximum diameter of the tapered sleeve 52. In this sample embodiment, too, the connecting section 72 is in the form of a nut with an internal thread "j8.
In the case of the wall-plug in Fig. 4, modification of the connecting section 72 is indicated by dash-dotted lines, and the connecting section forms the head of a screw 80 which is indicated by dash-dotted lines.
The parts of the wall-plug formed of vibrationdamping material may, for example, consist of a resilient rubbery material. This may be a natural or synthetic rubber. Good vibration-damping properties are obtained if the material has a hardness of from 65 to 95 Shore, and preferably 80 Shore.
