Abstract

A metal strong box has concealed hinges, the hinge pin 9 being welded in place inside the box, the door having offset hinge plates 12, 13. The hinge pin has roller bushes 17 fitted over its length to prevent sawing through a hole drilled or cut in the box. The strong box is concealed within a cabinet constructed as a piece of household furniture and has a concealment locking fillet piece to disguise the joint between the doors. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Security cabinet The invention relates to metal strong boxes or security cabinets and the like. The particular matters for which novelty is claimed are the method of concealment of the door hinges, a method of preventing removal of the door hinge pin by sawing, and the method of construction and opening of the door or doors of a concealing cabinet.
Drawings showing details of the above are as follows: Sheet 1. Concealed door hinges and antisawing device, Figs. 1, 2, 3.
Sheet 2. Construction of the door or doors of a concealment cabinet and method of opening same.
In Fig. 1 on Sheet 1, a typical example of the strong box, door and shelves is shown.
The strong box 1 has a rigid door 2 reinforced by angle or strips 3 welded thereto, mortice locks 4 having the bolt of the locks 5 passing through apertures in said angles of strips 3 and from thence into apertures 6 pierced in a strip 7 forming a return at right angles to the door aperture 8 the said lock bolts passing through both apertures, forming a secure device depending on simple sheer strength of the bolts and on the concealment of the locks within the box space for security.
The hinge pin 9 is welded to the top and bottom plates of the box at points 10 and 11 after being passed through holes in the top and bottom plates of the box and welded flush with the outside surface, the weld then being ground flush.
Fig. 2 shows a section of the hinge attached by this method.
An alternative method of fixing the hinge pin is shown in the sectional drawing in Fig.
3, in which the hinge pin 9 has plates 1 6 welded to each end, the plates being subsequently welded to the inner surfaces of the box top and bottom plates.
In Figs. 1, 2 and 3 the door hinge plates 1 2 and 1 3 are welded to the stiffening strips 3 at 1 4 and 1 5 respectively and are rotatably mounted on the hinge pin 9.
Bushes or ferrules 17, 1 8 are loosely rotatably mounted on the hinge pin 9, covering the pin between the door hinge plates 1 2 and 1 3 and between plate 1 2 and the top plate of the box and between the plate 1 3 and the bottom plate of the box, the bushes acting as rollers to render difficult sawing of the hinge pin by means of a saw blade introduced through a hole drilled or cut in the sides or door.
In Fig. 4 on Sheet 2, a typical concealment cabinet is shown, which may be made of wood, metal or other materials commonly used for furniture construction.
The cabinet may have two doors hinged at the sides and be faced with mouldings to represent opening drawers.
One or more working opening drawers may be fitted to the cabinet above or below the doors.
A vertical fillet feature between the drawers on either side of the cabinet is used to conceal the joint between the two doors and also as a locking bar.
The door hinges are concealed behind mouldings fitted on the sides of the cabinet.
A cabinet 20 having conventional opening drawers 21 and 22, has two doors 23 and 24 hinged at the sides. A fillet feature 25 is fitted to the cabinet, concealing the centre joint between the door edges.
In Fig. 5 a section through the fillet piece is shown. A moulded or otherwise decorated fillet piece of wood or any other suitable material has let into the back surface a metal bar 26 the bar being fixed to the fillet by screws or other fastenings concealed from the front. The metal bar has a hook 28 projecting from the top end, being shaped to protrude through a hole 29 in the frame 30 between the drawers 21 and 22, so that when pushed through the hole 29 the hook 28 is enabled to drop behind a catch plate 31 fitted to the inside of the frame below the hole 29 thus locking the fillet piece to the front of the cabinet.
The lower end of the metal bar 26 projects a short distance below the fillet piece, the tongue so formed being engaged in a slot 27 cut in the moulding 32 at the base of the cabinet, the tongue being entered into the slot 27 at the same times as the hook 28 is entered into the hole 29, allowing the fillet piece to drop and become secured at top and bottom in a concealed manner.
1. A strong box having a door hinged on concealed hinges, said hinges comprising a hinge pin welded to the top and bottom plates of the strong box, having been passed through holes in said top and bottom plates and hinge plates attached to the door, rotatably mounted on the hinge pin.
2. A strong box as described in claim 1, but having the hinge pin welded at its ends to plates, said plates being subsequently welded to the inner surfaces of the top and bottom plates of the box.
3. A strong box as described in claims 1 or 2, having roller bushes fitted on the hinge pin to prevent sawing of the hinge pin.
4. A strong box as described in claims 1, 2 or 3 enclosed in a concealment cabinet designed to appear as household furniture pieces, having concealed doors secured by a fillet piece covering the seam between the doors and having a hook and tongue to retain the fillet piece in place and prevent discovery of the doors.
