Abstract

An analogue signal, such as a speech signal, is encoded by a delta modulation encoder 3 and stored in a digital memory 5, or is decoded by a delta modulation decoder from the store 5. The speed at which the bits are produced by an encoder 3 and read into the memory 5 or read out of the store 5 and decoded by the decoder is controlled by the instantaneous value of a characteristic quantity of the analogue signal or the associated binary coded signal. The characteristic quantity may be the binary pattern which is produced by a limited number of successive bits of the encoded or read-out signal. It is thus possible to reduce the memory space required for a given length of signal to be reproduced with a given quality. <IMAGE>
