Abstract

Ornithopters; propelling; steering and balancing; planes and the like, constructron of.-The operator of a motorless flying machine is strapped in a saddle 12 supported by straps 11 suspended from a frame 7, 8 rigidly fixed to a structure 3 uniting the wings so that the operator is prevented from being displaced upwards or laterally when working the apparatus. His shoulders are held against pade 13 by straps 14. The wings are connected to hand levers 5, 6, which are universally jointed to the structure 3 and connected thereto by strong resilient ties 4 in such a manner that while the wings are normady maintained in a horizontal plane by suitably moving the levers 5. 6, they may be reciprocated to propel the machine or adjusted for stabilizing purposes. The wings are also pivotally connected to converging levers 16, 17 which carry at their other ends a loop 20 in which the operator's feet rest. Combined movement of the arm lovers 5, 6 and the foot levers 16, 17 may be used for reciprocating the wings. Steering is effected by inclining the body and by laterally moving the foot levers 16, 17. When taking off, the feet are freed from the loop 20 and a jump or run is taken. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that the wings may be covered with bird pinion feathers. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
