Abstract

The system for a vehicle goods platform comprises four corner upright members 1 to 4 and two intermediate upright members 5 and 6 disposed substantially midway between the corner members on the longer sides of the platform. The lower ends of these members 1 to 6 are formed to engage conventional twist locks on the vehicle platform and the upper ends are formed to receive the ends of corresponding horizontal members 7 to 11 extending between adjacent upright members. This upper end formation comprises at least one U- shaped cross section support 12 defining an aperture to receive a locking pin to hold the corresponding horizontal member in position. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A vehicle goods restraint system The present invention relates to a restraint system for goods vehicles of the type having goods platforms.
At present goods on the platforms of goods vehicles are often held on the vehicle by means of tarpaulin over the goods tied down by lengths of rope or cable fixed to the edges of the platform.
The use of tarpaulins obscures the nature of the goods being carried. This is dangerous where the goods are of a hazardous nature, such as drums of corrosive liquid, for hazard warning signs placed on the drums are concealed from an onlooker.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a restraint system for a vehicle comprising a plurality of upright members and a plurality of horizontal members each upright member being formed at one end to receive a locking member to lock the member to the vehicle and at the other end to interengage with one or more horizontal members such that, when assembled together, the members define with a vehicle platform on which they are to be mounted a substantially parallelepipedic enclosure.
According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a vehicle having a goods platform, and a goods restraint system connected to the platform, the goods restraint system comprising a plurality of upright members and a plurality of horizontal members each upright member being formed at one end to receive a locking member to lock the member to the platform and at the other end to interengage with one or more horizontal members such that, when assembled together, the members define with the platform on which they are mounted a substantially parallelepipedic enclosure.
A preferred embodiment of the invention may comprise any one or more of the following advantageous features:- (a) Each upright is of hollow box section and defines an aperture in each face of the box at the said one end to receive the locking member, (b) Each upright is formed with channels at the said other end to receive one or more horizontal members, (c) There are four corner uprights, two of which are formed at the said other end with supports on two adjacent faces to receive horizontal members partially defining two adjacent faces of the parallelepiped, and the other two of which are formed at the said other end with a support in one 'face only, (d) The parallelepiped is of rectangular plan section and there are two intermediate uprights respectively disposed between the two pairs of corner uprights bounding the longer sides of the rectangle, the intermediate uprights receiving at their said other ends respective arms of an inverted U-shaped cross member and ends of horizontal members extending from the two adjacent corner upright members.
In order that the invention may be more clearly understood, one embodiment thereof will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which, Fig. 1 shows a side elevational view of a restraint system for a lorry trailer, Fig. 2 shows a plan view of the restraint system of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 shows an end elevational view of the restraint system of Fig. land Fig. 4 shows a detailed view of part of the system of Fig. 1, Referring to the drawings, the restraint system shown is attached to the platform P of a trailer of an articulated truck for carrying a standard forty foot container. The system comprises six upright members and five horizontal members. Four of the upright members, referenced 1 to 4, are corner members. The remaining two members, reference 5 and 6, are intermediate members disposed between the corner members on the longer sides of the trailer.
Four of the horizontal members, referenced 7 to 10, are of equal length and are disposed along the sides of the vehicle trailer and the fifth, referenced 11, is slightly shorter and is disposed at the rear.
Each of the upright members 1 to 6 is formed at the base to receive the locking members of the six conventional twist locks forming a part of the trailer. At the top end the members 1 to 6 have welded to them horizontally extending U-section supports 12. Members 1 and 3 have only one support each (no horizontal member is required between members 1 and 3 because of the trailer bar), members 5 and 6 have two supports each extending in opposite directions and members 2 and 4 have two supports each extending at right angles to one another. Each support 12 defines an aperture 1 3 through which a locking pin 14 is inserted to hold the corresponding horizontal member in position. This is shown in greater detail in Fig. 4 which shows the member 1.Members 1 to 4 are made of 4" X 4" steel box section, members 5 and 6 of 4" x 2" steel box section, and members 7 to 11 of 2" x 1" mild steel box section. To give the system extra rigidity a cross member 1 5 of inverted U-shape extends across between members 5 and 6, the arms of the 'U' being received within the box sections of members 5 and 6.
With the above described system, goods may be restrained on the platform whilst permitting the goods to be viewed from outside to allow any hazard markings thereon to be read. The system can be applied to any trailer having twist locks or other locking system and can be easily adapted to the size of trailer.
It is inexpensive, simple to produce, and easily assembled.
