Description

SPECIFICATION Fitting for hingedly interconnecting two members The invention relates to a fitting for hingedly interconnecting two members, particularly a leaf on a cabinet.
It has previously been proposed to provide a fitting having a pair of lever arms linked, for example by means of a mounting plate, to the inner face of a cabinet side, and by means of a base plate to the inside of a leaf, a stop arrangement being provided to restrict the leaf movement in the direction of opening and for this purpose a spring, mounted on the one hand on the corresponding cabinet side, and, on the other hand, on the leaf.
An object of the present invention is to produce a fitting which, with simple design takes up very little of the interior of a cabinet and makes it possible for a leaf in its open position to leave the cabinet opening free to the greatest possible extent, without protruding over the top of the cabinet.
According to the present invention there is provided a fitting for hingedly interconnecting two members, said fitting comprising a pair of lever arms linked to the inside of one of the members and by means of a common base plate to the inside of the other of the members, the two lever arms being of short design and being linked to opposite sides of an edge section of the base plate of said other member which is directed towards the inside of said one member, and a spring, providing a stop arrangement for restricting movement of said other member in the direction of opening, being pivotally connected between said two members.
Preferably the pivot points for the two lever arms and the spring together with the stop arrangement, are so arranged and aligned to one another that, in the open position of said other member, the pivot point of the outer lever arm on said other member, and the two pivot points of the inner lever arm are substantially in line, while in the closed position of said other member, the four pivot points of the two lever arms form a rectangle.
The design of the fitting according to the invention brings with it the advantage of simple construction and less expensive manufacture, it is space-saving and represents the optimum in terms of interior space taken, moreover it is accompanied by the advantages which result from the solution of the problem defined above.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a front view of a fitting according to the invention in a closed position; Fig. 2 shows the arrangement as in Fig. 1 in an open position in the same manner of presentation; and Fig. 3 is a side view of the arrangement according to Fig. 1.
The fitting illustrated in the drawing serves to join a hinged leaf 1 to a cabinet, of which a side 2 is indicated. The fitting possesses a pair of lever arms 3,4, which are pivoted on the one hand by a mounting plate 5 at pivot points 6 and 7 on the cabinet side 2, and on the other hand on a base plate 8 at points 9 and 10 on an inner side of the leaf 1. The fitting possesses in addition a stop arrangement to limit movement of the leaf 1 in the direction of opening and a spring 11, pivoted on the one hand on the associated cabinet side 2 at point 12 and on the other hand on the leaf 1 at point 13. These measures and features are known.
The pivotal points 6,7 or9, 10 or 12, 13 of the two lever arms 3,4 and the spring 11, as well as the stop, are so arranged and aligned with one another that, in the open position of the leaf 1, the leaf side pivotal point 10 of the outer lever arm 4 and the two pivotal points 6, 9 of the inner lever arm 3 are at least substantially in line, as is shown in Fig. 2, while in the closed position of the leaf 1, the four pivotal points 9, 10, 6, 7 of the two lever arms 3,4 form a rectangle, as can be seen in Fig. 1. As shown in both Figs. 1 and 2, the two lever arms 3,4 converge on one another and in so doing they cross or substantially cross each other. These two lever arms 3, 4, which are located in the uppermost end area of the cabinet interior in immediate proximity to the leaf 1 and the top of the cabinet (cf. Fig. 1), together form in the open position of the leaf (cf. Fig. 2) an angle (a) of 25 - 40 , and in the closed position of the leaf (cf. Fig. 1 ) an angle (ss) of 20 - 30 . The two lever arms 3,4 are of short design and are linked to the leaf 1 over a common base plate 8 and specifically to an edge section 8a thereof bent towards the cabinet interior, which they engage from opposite sides, as can be seen in particular from Fig. 3.All these measures serve, on the one hand to take up little of the cabinet interior space, by locating the fitting as far as possible in the outermost corner of the cabinet interior and allowing it to protrude as little as possible into the cabinet interior space, and on the other hand, they serve to facilitate simple, effecient operation along with extremely simple design with associated low production costs.
It is provided for, that in the closed position of the leaf (Fig. 1 ) the cabinet side pivotal point 7 of the outer lever arm 4, as well as its leaf side pivotal point 10 for opening the cabinet, which is indicated by the dashed line 14, are advanced. In the open position of the leaf 1 according to Fig. 2, the two leaf side pivotal points 9, 10 of the two levers 3, 4 protrude. In the closed position of the leaf 1 (Fig. 1 ) the two leaf side pivotal points 9, 10 of the two lever arms 3, 4 are advanced to the top of the cabinet, which is indicated by the dashed line 15, whereby the leaf side pivotal point 10 of the outer lever arm 4 is lower than pivotal point 9. The cabinet side pivotal point 7 of the outer lever arm is lower than pivotal point 6 of the inner lever arm 3.
In the closed position of the leaf (Fig. 1), the various pivotal points, viewed from the cabinet opening, are in the following sequence: first comes the leaf side pivotal point 10 of the outer lever arm 4, then its cabinet side pivotal point 7, next the leaf side pivotal point 9 of the inner lever arm 3, then its cabinet side pivotal point 6.
In the open position of the leaf 1 (Fig. 2) the cabinet side pivotal point 7 of the outer lever arm 4 lies below the cabinet side pivotal point 6 ofthe inner lever arm 3 and the leaf side pivotal point 9 of the inner lever arm 3 below the leaf side pivotal point 10 of the outer lever arm 4. In this open position of the leaf 1 (Fig. 2), viewed in the direction of the cabinet opening, thus in the direction of the arrow 16, the cabinet side pivotal point 7 of the outer lever arm 4 is advanced relative to the cabinet side pivotal point 6 of the inner lever arm 3 and the leaf side pivotal point 10 of the outer lever arm 4 is advanced relative to the leaf side pivotal point 9 of the inner lever arm 3.Therefore, again in the open position of the leaf (Fig. 2), viewed in the direction of the cabinet back, thus again in the direction of arrow 16, the various pivotal points are in the following sequence: first of all the cabinet side pivotal point 6 of the inner lever arm 3, then the cabinet side pivotal point 7 of the outer lever arm 4, then the leaf side pivotal point 9 of the inner lever arm 3 and finally the leaf side pivotal point 10 of the outer lever arm 4.
These measures serve to produce a fitting, with the aid of which, on the one hand, the hinged leaf is lifted up from the front of the cabinet sides surrounding the cabinet opening right at the start of the swivelling, and on the other hand, with minimal effort, with the hinged leaf swivelled to the furthest swivel position, the cabinet opening can be opened as far as possible without the hinged leaf projecting out over the cabinet surface in an inconvenient manner and the cabinet interior is accessible from the outside in an optimum way.The further measures employed in the preferred embodiment which also serve towards this end, arethatthe length of the inner lever arm 3 - measured between the pivotal points 6 and 9 - and the length of the outer lever arm 4-measured between pivotal points 7 and 10 - are in the ratio of 5-5.5 to 6.5 - 7.5 to one another. The ratio here of the spacing of the cabinet side pivotal points 6,7 of the two arms 3,4 to the spacing of the leaf side pivotal points 9, 10 of these arms is 2 to 1.
The spring 11 can be penumatic, but, in the embodiment shown, the spring 11 is designed as a compression spring, is guided in a cylindrical guide and is joined to the leaf, or to the base plate 8 on the leaf, through a section 18 projecting from the guide in the manner of a piston. The arrangement is so designed that the spring 11, during the transition from the open position to the closed position of the leaf 1, performs a swivelling movement around a hinge point 12 on the cabinet side 2, in the course of which it passes through a dead-centre position. The distance between a leaf side hinge point 13 of the spring 11 and the leaf side hinge point 10 of the outer lever arm 4, is in the ratio of 7 - 7.5 to 8-8.5 to the distance between the leaf side hinge point 13 ofthe spring 11 and the leaf side hinge point 9 of the inner lever arm, while the distance between the cabinet side hinge point 12 ofthe spring 11 and the cabinet side hinge point 6 ofthe inner lever arm 3 are in the ratio 16- to 14- to the distance between the cabinet side hinge point 12 of the spring 11 and the cabinet side hinge point 7 of the outer lever arm 4.
These measures also contribute towards the creation of a fitting which takes up as little space as possible, functions safely and reliably and is easily manufactu red.
The stop arrangement is suitably formed for example a piston type designed stop on the spring and a counter-stop on the spring guide.
A further simplification of manufacture is provided for by the measure that in the case of a preferred embodiment, in which the two lever arms 3 and 4 are designed as stamped metal parts, a central area of the inner lever arm 3 is bent slightly away from the two end areas 6,9 serving as link parts, towards the cabinet interior, as is indicated by the lines 20, 21 in Fig. 1, while the outer lever arm can be held in a single piane.
Each cabinet is assigned the outer and inner lever arms 3,4 and the spring 11 is assigned to only one of the two cabinet sides, whereas in the case of other embodiments a spring is assigned to each cabinet side.
For the above reasons, the spring 11 has only been drawn in dashed form in Fig. 1 and 2, in order to indicate to some extent that this spring can be provided either on both sides or on only one side of the cabinet opening. For the same reason an extension of the mounting plate 5 is also drawn in dashed form in Fig. 1 and 2, that is, the arrangement can also be such that the mounting plate carrying the cabinet side pivotal points 6,7 of the two lever arms 3,4 also carries the cabinet side hinge point 12 of the spring.
In this way the entire fitting can to a certain extent be combined into a unit, which can be assembled with special ease and simplicity.
The cabinet side hinge point 12 of the spring 11, viewed in the direction of the cabinet opening, is at substantially the same height as the cabinet side pivotal point 7 of the outer lever arm 4, in the closed position of the leaf, while the leaf side hinge point 13 of the spring 11, again in the closed position, is between the cabinet side pivotal points 6,7 and the leaf side pivotal points 9, 10 of the two lever arms. In this case the hinge points 12, 13 of the spring 11, seen from the top of the cabinet, are below the pivotal points 6, 7, 9, 10 of the two lever arms 3, 4.
In the open position of the leaf (Fig. 2) the cabinet side hinge point 12 of the spring 11 is substantially below the cabinet side pivotal point 7 of the outer lever arm 4, while the leaf side hinge point 13 of the spring 11 is in front of all five other pivotal points, if in accordance with arrow 16 all points are viewed from the rear of the cabinet. In the direction of the top of the cabinet the hinge point 12 of spring 11 is once again below all other pivotal and hinge points, while the hinge point 13 of the spring 11 is at subs tantiallythe same height as the pivotal point 7 of the outer lever arm 4.
