Description
SPECIFICATION
Motor vehicle, especially a motor caravan
The present invention relates to a motor vehicle, especially one equipped as a motor caravan, having beneath the floor a tank for liquified gas to supply a cooker, for heating, for a refrigerator and for other outlets , the outside of said tank having welded to it a base plate carrying all the controls and connections.
Gas tanks of this kind mounted beneath the floor of a vehicle are subjected to extraordinary stresses, the controls directly connected to the tank, such as the filler valve and the outlet valve, being especially vulnerable. The pressure regulator is generally connected to the outlet valve but has no separate securing means, the supply tube leading from here to the distributor feeding the various outlets in the vehicle.
The problem sought to be overcome by the present invention is the provision of a protective arrangement for the controls mounted on the tank and enclosing in particular the pressure regulator. At the same time it must be possible to remove the pressure regulator from the outlet valve when it is required to connect it to a gas cylinder located beneath or near the vehicle. When the motor caravan is intended to remain for some time at the same location, it is preferable to draw the gas required for the various uses in the vehicle from a gas cylinder unattached to the vehicle, so that it is not necessary from time to time to drive the entire vehicle to a gas-supply point to refill the tank attached to the vehicle.
As a solution to this problem, a vehicle of the kind initially described is characterised by a cover plate attached to the base plate of the gas tank and in the same plane, which cover plate extends from the outlet valve at that side by at least the length of the pressure regulator and its screw connector, and is provided with outwardly-angled lateral walls which project outwards beyond all controls and connections.
At its lower longitudinal edge, the cover plate is preferably angled outwards to form a bottom panel. The angled lateral walls are preferably of approximately semi-circular form.
In the lateral wall at the outlet valve side a wide slot is preferably provided, into which the supply tube from the pressure regulator is inserted and through which it passes, said slot being disposed preferably obliquely upwards.
The extremity of the slot is preferably in alignment with the connector of the outlet valve. In the wide slot a grommet of resilient material may be fitted to receive the supply tube and to seal off the interior of the control box.
A curved lid is pivotally mounted by means of pivot pins on the lateral walls, so that it pivots about the centre thereof. The lid carries a lock which may be operated when the lid is in the fully raised position. The lock preferably engages the angled bottom panel of the cover- plate. It is also possible to provide an aperture to receive the supply tube at the upper, outer corner of the curved lid at the pressure regulator side. As a desirable addition, the controls may include a gauge to indicate the contents of the tank. The gauge carries a scale showing the contents preferably as a percentage.
According to the invention, the controls are protected from mechanical influences, for example damage by stones by the use of one single, angled cover plate secured to the base plate of the gas tank carrying the controls, whilst, by means of a simple, curved sliding lid, the control box formed by the angled cover plate can be completely closed and locked, whereby dirt is prevented from reaching the controls and these are no longer accessible to unauthorised persons. Care has also been taken to include in the control box the pressure regulator connected to the outlet valve, so that it is likewise protected.At the same time, the facility is available of separating the pressure regulator at any time from the outlet valve in order to remove it from the control box and connect it to a separate gas cylinder placed beneath or near the vehicle when it has to remain for some time at the same location. By means of the special construction of the control box according to the invention, it is also possible to include a tank contents gauge carrying a scale preferably graduated in percentages, so that the contents can be checked and the tank refilled timeously. A gauge of this kind cannot be fitted where the controls are exposed since the casing would be too easily damaged by mechanical influences.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example and, in more detail, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic side elevation of a motor vehicle with liquified gas tank fitted therebeneath;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the liquified gas tank;
Figure 3 shows the control box;
Figure 4 is a front elevation, partly in section, with the control box open;
Figure 5 is a side elevation of the closed control box on the tank; and
Figure 6 is a side elevation of the open control box, the pressure regulator having been detached and connected to a separate gas cylinder.
Beneath the floor of a motor vehicle 1, preferably between the axles and approximately in the same plane as the front wheel 3 and rear wheel 4 at one side, a gas tank 5 with brackets 6 is screwed to the cross-struts 7 beneath the vehicle floor 2. On the outside of the gas tank 5 a base plate 8 is welded, on which all controls are mounted, that is to say filler valve with cap 9, relief valve 10 and
outlet valve 11 with side-connector 1 2. There
is also provided a tank contents gauge 13, the dial 14 of which preferably indicates the state of the contents as a percentage.
A metal cover plate 1 6 is secured to the
base plate 8 by screws 1 5 and is provided with a cut-away portion which exposes the
base plate 8. The cover plate 1 6 extends
beyond the base plate 8 at the side of the outlet valve 11, so that the pressure regulator
17, with its connection 1 8 to the outlet valve
11 and also its connection 1 9 to the supply tube 20, can be accommodated.
The cover plate 16, is provided at each side with a lateral wall 21, 22 which is angled
outwards, is of semi-circular construction, and
projects beyond all the controls. In the lateral wall 21 adjacent to the pressure regulator 1 7 a wide slot 23 is provided which lies in alignment with the screw-connector 12 of the outlet valve 11 at its rear end, so that the supply tube 20 can be passed through at that point. Where the supply tube 20 passes through, it carries a grommet 24 of resilient material. This grommet may be of sufficiently large dimension to fill completely the slot 23, so that not only is the tube 20 protected at this point, but dirt is also prevented from penetrating to the interior through the slot 23.
At its lower edge the cover plate 16 is angled outwards to form a bottom panel 25 interconnecting the lateral walls 21, 22.
At the centre of the semi-circular lateral walls 21, 22 a curved lid 27 is pivotally mounted by means of pins 26, which lid is swung downwards to disclose the controls and when swung upwards (see Fig. 5), the lid, together with the bottom panel 25, completely encloses the control box. The curved lid is provided with a lock 28 which engages the front edge of the bottom panel 25, so that, when the lid 27 is raised, that is to say in the closed position, it is securely locked in that position.
When the curved lid 27 is opened, the connection 18 between the pressure regulator and the connector 12 of the outlet valve 11 can be easily unscrewed. The pressure regulator with tube 20 can then be removed from the control box, whereupon the tube, together with the grommet 24, is withdrawn obliquely outwards and upwards. The pressure regulator 17, with its screw connector 1 8 can then be attached to a gas cylinder 29 placed beneath or near the vehicle, as shown in Fig. 6. The use of an external gas cylinder is convenient when the vehicle is to remain for some time at the same location. During this time, gas should not be drawn from the tank 5 attached to the vehicle since, when the tank is empty, the vehicle must be driven to a gas-supply point to refill it. It is possible at any time to check the state of the contents of the tank 5 fitted to the vehicle by reading the scale 14 on the contents gauge 1 3. This scale is preferably graduated to show the conte'nts of the tank as a percentage.
In the case of a further embodiment (not
illustrated here), instead of the slot 23 in the lateral wall 21, through which the tube 20 is passed, the curved lid 27 is provided at its upper corner 30 adjacent to the pressure regulator 17 with an aperture, through which the tube 20 passes when the lid 27 is closed.
