Abstract

205,491. Wattier, L. Oct. 13, 1922, [Convention date]. Leakage, removing.-The hull of a seaplane is provided in its lower portion with water-tight compartments in the form of longitudinal tubes which automatically fill with water to the extent desired by the pilot when the machine alights so as to increase its stability as a marine vessel. Longitudinal vertical partitions in the tubes prevent undue lateral displacement of the water when they are partially filled. The compartments are arranged in the forward part of the hull so that the main planes assume zero incidence when the machine is at rest, thus facilitating the action of the tail planes in keeping the machine head to wind. When flight is to be resumed the compartments are emptied. The compartments, of which the rear end of one is shown in the Figure, comprise parallel tubes closed at their front ends and provided at their rear ends with boxes 3 having hinged flaps 4 opening inwards. When the machine alights, water enters passages 6 and pressing open the flaps 4 enters the tubes 1 which are air vented. When the tubes are filled the flaps 4 close by their own weight and can only be opened by raising a rod 7 which is connected to the flaps by links 8. Simultaneously with the raising of the rod 7 a fan may be started to blow out the water. The same fan may be utilized to withdraw air from the chambers 1 to assist in filling them. The rod 7 may be connected to the free edges of the flaps. When starting flight the lateral compartments may be first emptied and the rest discharged when the machine has gained sufficient speed. Specification 182,461 is referred to.
