Abstract

A housing (15) of an espagnolette lock comprises, beside an ordinary rotatable member (16) for actuation of an operating rod (12) for fastening members (13), a second rotatable member (21), which is adapted for cooperation with a cylinder lock of conventional type. A displaceable locking bolt (25) extends between the two rotatable members. The second rotatable member (21) is provided with a finger (33), which is in the form of a hook (34) extending into a slot in the bolt, and upon rotation in one direction moves the bolt away from the first rotatable member (16), and which is also formed as a cam (35) for forcing the bolt towards the first rotatable member, upon rotation in the opposite direction. The first rotatable member (16) is provided with an external guiding surface (26) having such peripheral extension, that the bolt (25) can lock the first rotatable member in a certain angular position thereof only, corresponding to a full locking position of the espagnolette. The guiding surface (26) is in this position terminated by a detent (28) for engagement with the bolt. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION An espagnolette lock This invention relates to an espagnolette lock.
Espagnolettes are used as closure means for windows and certain doors, especially French doors. It is known to provide an espagnolette with a lock having a housing enclosing a rotatable member, which by way of a link actuates an operating rod. This may be a unitary member passing through the housing, or it may be composed of two parts, which are movable towards and away from each other. The operating rod actuates a number of latch plungers, and it is possible to arrange so at least one end of the operating rod, in closed position, extends into the frame surrounding the window, or door, respectively.
The latch plungers may be designed as hooks, i.e. they are formed to be rotated into corresponding recesses in the frame, and to grip components therein.
The closure obtainable by means of espagnolettes is very satisfactory, and ensures a tightness by forcing the door, or window, respectively against its seat at the frame. The means for locking the espagnolette have, however, not been satisfactory.
It has been proposed to mount a cylinder lock within the handie, but that can favourably be done at the inside of a door or window.
The object of the present invention is to provide an espagnolette lock, in which it is possible to mount locking cylinders directly at the housing.
According to the present invention there is provided an espagnolette lock comprising a housing enclosing a first rotatable member adapted to actuate at least one displaceable operating rod actuating a number of latch plungers, wherein a second rotatable member is fitted within the housing, and is provided with an external finger, as well as a fitting for co-operation with a cylinder lock, the first rotatable member is provided with an external guiding surface having a detent, and a displaceable bolt is arranged between the two rotatable members for actuation by the finger of the second rotatable member into engagement with, or disengagement from the detent.
The distance between the two rotatable members can be selected to correspond with that for mortise locks of standard design. The second rotatable member, as well as the components surrounding the latter are designed to permit the fitting of a common cylinder lock Anyone used to the fitting of such locks can easily mount the new espagnolette housing. The cylinder is attached directly to the housing, metal against metal, which means a strong and exact mounting. Milling for the housing, as well as for the cylinder and the handle is made according to standard instructions.
Milling and boring for cylinder and handle will thus require circular holes, which is favourable for the carpenter's work.
The guiding surface at the first rotatable member preferably has such angular extension adjacent to the detent, that the locking bolt can be pushed into the first rotatable member at a certain angular position thereof only.
A finger at the second rotatable member is preferably provided with a cam adapted to force the locking bolt towards, and to lift the bolt away from the first rotatable member. The locking bolt is advantageously biased by a spring which stabilizes the movements of the second rotatable member and prevents clacking.
The invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a lock housing and associated parts in open position, and Figures 2 and 3 show the same housing with the first rotatable member and with both members in locked positions, respectively.
The espagnolette shown in the drawings comprises a conventional edge bar 10, which is to be recessed into the vertical edge of a door or window, remote from its hinges. The edge bar is provided with a number of guides 11 for an operating rod 12, which is displaceable along the edge bar, and which actuates a number of latch plungers 13, being pivotably connected to the rod by means of trunnions 14. The latch plungers are, during their movements, directed by means of guides 13' fixedly connected to the edge bar 10.
A lock housing 1 5 is also attached to the edge bar, and encloses a first rotatable member 16, which is provided with a square passage 1 7 for co-operation with a mating dowel at an operating handle. The rotatable member is provided with a radially extending arm 18, which by way of a link 19 is connected to the operating rod 12, to move the latter upwards and downwards.
A blade spring 40 is mounted within the housing into contact with the end of arm 18. The spring will be put under tension when rod 12 is brought into locking position. In open position the latch plungers will be safely retained in retracted position, and the necessity of tensioning the spring will denote one end position of the rotatable member.
The arrangement furthermore ensures that the centre of the joint between the rotatable member 1 6 and link 19, in closed position, will be moved past an imaginary line from the centre of the rotatable member and the joint between the link and the rod, so also the other end position of the member will be defined.
As mentioned above the operating rod may be divided into two parts, and on such occasion the rotatable member will have to be provided with two arms 18, which each, by way of an associated link 19, actuates one rod part.
The housing is made in two halves, which are secured together by means of screws or rivets 20.
In the drawings the half of the housing, being topmost in the plane of the drawing, is removed, so it becomes easier to see the different components of the mechanism.
The housing further encloses a second rotatable member 21, which is provided with a fitting 22 of the type suited for co-operation with a cylinder lock of conventional type. For mounting the cylinder lock the housing is provided with a number of bores 23. The part of the housing surrounding the second rotatable member, may possibly be strengthened by a doubiing plate 24.
A locking bolt 25, displaceable forwards and backwards, is provided between the two rotatable members.
The first rotatable member 16 is provided with an external guiding surface 26, which comprises a cam-shaped portion 27, and a detent 28. The intension is that the first rotatable member shall be turned slightly less than one quarter of a revolution, and the guiding surface 26 terminates at one end with a stop 29, which together with one of the rivets 20a, holding the halves of the housing together, defines the clockwise turning.
When the operating rod with its latch plungers 13 has been moved to locking position the first rotatable member has been turned to the position shown in Figure 2, in which the detent is brought to a position suitable for the reception of the locking bolt 25. This can be moved into engagement with the first rotatable member, when the latter is in a position corresponding to fully locking position of the latch plungers. An unintentional action at the cylinder lock, when the operating handle, and thus the first rotatable member, remains in full, or partly open position, will only mean that the locking bolt 25 is brought into contact with cam 27, where it cannot prevent a movement of the espagnolette to a fully closing position.
The locking bolt 25 is biased by a spring 30 away from the first rotatable member. The spring is fitted between a fixed support 31 in the housing and a projection 32 from the bolt. This spring 30 stabilizes the movement of the member 21 and prevents clacking.
The second rotatable member 21 is provided with a sidewardly extending finger 33, which is formed like a hook 34 engaging a slot in the bolt, and furthermore is provided with a cam surface 35, which in co-operation with the projection 32 at the bolt can force the latter, against the action of spring 30, into the engagement with the detent at the first rotatable member, in the manner illustrated in Figure 3.
As is evident from Figure 3, the finger 33 will, in its end position, retain the locking bolt in a -secure engagement, which effectively prevents a forcing of the lock.
The distance between the two rotatable members 16 and 21 meets, as is pointed out above, the requirements of accepted standards for the mounting of locks at doors and the general arrangement facilitates an easy fitting.
The lock may have a handle at the inside of the door only, or optionally internally as well as externally, and it is possible to locate the cylinder at either side of the door, so the same may be locked from inside or from outside. The handle for turning the first rotatable member is retained by means of screws passing through holes 36.
