Setting type; keyboards. - A manually-operated type-setting machine comprises a magazine having vertical channels 2, retention members 5 engaging the bottom type, a transfer duct 13 arranged beneath the magazine and into which each of the channels 2 opens individually, and means enabling a type released from one of the channels on the operation of a. key to be swept along the duct by the inward movement of an impeller, a second impeller serving to arrest the type adjacent the delivery opening. Operation of the key causes the withdrawal of the corresponding retention member 5 through the medium of a pivoted trip-member 8, the retention member being normally pressed by a spring 7 to hold the lowest type in position. The depressed key also acts on one of two pivoted plates 16 which moves the corresponding impeller 15 outwards through the medium of parts 17, 18, 19, 21, each impeller sliding in the duct 13 and being carried by a head 15<a> provided with rollers 24 movable along a guide-way 25. On release of the key, a spring 26 returns the impeller to. cause it to sweep the type along until it meets the other impeller, at which point it is over a delivery conduit 14 provided with a slot into which the type falls and by which it is turned from a position on its side into upright position for delivery to a type drum or other container. A number of magazines arranged in a carriage 4 slidable on a horizontal guide 27 may be provided, the forward and backward movement of the carriage 'being obtained through the medium of a shift-key 28. The Provisional Specification describes also a machine provided with one impeller only adapted to move the whole length of the transfer duct, and means for adjusting the height of the duct to suit particular characters.
