Abstract

The needle mounting (2) has an extension (8) at the back (7) of the needle, the extension extending to close to the bottom edge (9) of the comb (10) of the trick plate and surrounding the stem (1a) of the needle (1) except for that side from which the butt (6) of the tongue projects. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Compound Needle Mounting for Raschel Machines This invention relates to Raschel machines and more particularly to a compound needle mounting in which the needle stem is embedded or clamped to secure it, a comb or trick plate also being provided.
In a known compound needle mounting of this kind (see Figure 1) the arrangement of the tongue necessitates a very considerable distance between the bottom edge of the comb of the trick plate and the top of the needle mounting. The needle stem which in this region contains the tongue-accommodating groove is very unstable as a result. Although it would be possible to compensate for this by making the needle stem thicker, this would have an adverse effect on the gauge.
According to the present invention, a Raschel machine includes a trick plate, a compound needle and a mounting for the needle, the needle having a grooved stem in which a tongue is slidable and a root portion which is embedded in or clamped to the mounting, the mounting having an extension embracing the back and sides of the needle and extending to close to the bottom edge of the comb of the trick plate, the tongue having a butt which projects forwardly of the needle and whose travel extends at least partly over the part of the length of the needle over which the extension extends. The extension supports the needle to give it good stability in the region between the bottom edge of the comb of the trick plate and the butt of the associated tongue when the latter is in the bottom position.
The invention may be carried into practice in various ways but the needle mountings of two Raschel machines embodying the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a compound needle mounting according to the prior art; Figure 2 shows a compound needle mounting according to the invention; and Figure 3 shows a modified compound needle mounting according to the invention.
Referring to Figure 2, a compound needle 1 is embedded by its root in a mounting 2. When the needle is in the raised position, the butt 6 of a tongue 4 guided in a groove 5 in the needle 1 is located immediately above the part of the mounting 2 which surrounds the front of the needle stem 1 a. The mounting 2 carries an extension 8 at the back 7 of the needle, the extension 8 extending upwards to close to the bottom edge 9 of the comb of a trick plate 10 and embracing the back and both sides of the needle stem la.
In the embodiment shown in Figure 3, the mounting consists of a grooved plate 11, the needle back 7 fitting in a groove and being retained by a clamping plate 12 engaging the front of the needle root. When the needle 1 is in the raised position, the butt 6 which extends out of the needle groove 5 is located immediately above the clamping plate 12. The grooved plate 11 extends upwards approximately as far as the bottom edge 9 of the comb of the trick plate 1 0.
Here again, as in Figure 2, the needle stem 1 a is rigidly supported at the back 7 and on both sides as far as the bottom edge 9 of the comb of the trick plate so that the needle is stable.
If reference is again made to Figure 1, it will be seen that the mounting in which the root of the needle is embedded does not extend above the embedded portion or above the butt of the tongue.
Claims
1. A Raschel machine including a trick plate, a compound needle and a mounting for the needle, the needle having a grooved stem in which a tongue is slidable and a root portion which is embedded in or clamped to the mounting, the mounting having an extension embracing the back and sides of the needle and extending to close to the bottom edge of the comb of the trick plate, the tongue having a butt which projects forwardly of the needle and whose travel extends at least partly over the part of the length of the needle over which the extension extends.
2. A Raschel machine substantially as described herein with reference to Figure 2 or Figure 3 of the accompanying drawings.
