Description

SPECIFICATION A metal sink arrangement The invention relates to a metal sink arrangement and its method of manufacture.
Sink arrangements made from stainless metal sheet comprising a fitting flange connecting a draining board and a basin are already known (see French Patent No. 70 41254). In a sink of this type, the draining board comprises a rim bent back on itself and providing an engagement surface for the fitting flange. In a method for the manufacture of a known sink arrangement of this type, the fitting of the flange is carried out in two stages, firstly to the draining board and secondly to the basin. The result of this is that the known sink arrangement has a bead formed by the draining board, which bead projects towards the inside of the opening of the basin, the junction between the draining board and the basin being located in a region which tapers quite deeply and is directed towards the top and outside of the basin.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a metal sink arrangement comprising a draining board, a basin and a member interconnecting the draining board and the basin in a rigid manner, characterised by the fact that the draining board comprises a dropped edge 5 which has a rim which bears against the basin 3.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a method for the manufacture of a sink arrangement according to the first aspect of the present invention comprising the steps of producing a draining board with a dropped edge defining a shape substantially similar to the shape defined by the rim of a basin included in the arrangement and located adjacent said edge whereby a rim of the edge bears against the basin, attaching in a rigid manner, a connecting member to the draining board, causing the basin and the member to cooperate by applying the rim of the basin against the member, and bending the member over the rim of the basin in order to make the member grip said rim.
The present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure I is a diagrammatic sectional view of a sink arrangement according to the invention; and Figure 2 is a diagrammatic sectional view, to an enlarged scale, of part of the arrangement shown in Fig. 1.
The sink arrangement 1 is made of stainless steel sheet and comprises a draining board 2, a basin 3 and a member 4 interconnecting the draining board 2 and the basin 3 in a rigid manner.
The draining board 2 comprises an inner edge 5 which drops in the direction of the bottom 6 of the basin 3. This edge 5 is substantially vertical, directed downwards and substantially perpendicular to a main horizontal portion 7 of the draining board 2. In view of the fact that the dropped edge 5 is intended to rest on the basin 3 as will be seen hereafter, the dropped edge 5 may have a length which is substantially shorter than the rim of fitted sinks of the known state of the art.
When fitted, the member 4 of the sink comprises a first side 8, in particular its upper side, connected to the main portion 7, in particular to the lower face 9 of the portion, a second lower side 10 and a curved portion 11 for connecting the two sides 8 and 1 0. The arrangement constituted by the sides 8, 10 and the portion 11 has the general shape of a U laid on its side and the opening of which is directed towards the dropped edge 5. This U is flattened out so that it will grip the basin, as will be seen hereafter. The two sides 8, 10 either are or are not of the same length. In one possible embodiment, the first side 8 is longer than the second side 10 in order that the first side 8 extends into the vicinity of the dropped edge 5.
The member 4 is connected to the sink 1, respectively the first side 8 to the main plane 7 by any suitable means or member, in particular sticking, welding, bolting etc.
Apart from its bottom 6, the basin 3 comprises side walls 1 2 which are slightly inclined with respect to the vertical from the inside towards the outside of the sink and at the upper end part of this wall 12, a rim 1 3 which is horizontal and directed towards the outside of the sink. This rim 1 3 is retained by gripping between the two sides 8, 10 of the member 4. The rim 14 of the dropped edge 5, in particular the tip 1 5 of the dropped edge 5 comes to bear against the basin 3 in particular the upper part of the wall 1 2 or the curved portion 1 6 connecting the wall 1 2 to the rim 13.
As shown in Fig. 2, this embodiment is such that the sink does not have a bead towards the inside of its opening 1 7. In addition, the dropped edge 5 appears to form an extension of the wall 1 2 of the basin 3.
Also, the junction point 1 8 between the draining board 2 and the basin 3 is shallow, its thickness corresponding solely to the thickness of the draining board 2. Finally, a saving of material is achieved as regards the draining board 2, since the length of the dropped edge 5 is shorter than the rim of sink arrangements known hitherto.
The present invention also relates to a method for the manufacture of such a sink arrangement, in which the draining board 2 with its dropped edge 5 is produced first of all in one or more stages. It should be noted that hereafter there will be no further operations necessitating the involvement of the dropped edge 5. Then, the member 4, in particular its first side 8 is connected to preferably the main portion 7 of the draining board 2, by any suitable means and members, in particular by sticking, welding, bolting etc. At this stage, the member 4 is opened out, i.e. the second side 10 is moved away from the first side 8 in order to facilitate the application of the rim 1 3. For example, the second side 10 is moved through an angle of 90 away from the first side 8 as shown in dot dash line in Fig. 2. Subsequently, the basin 3 and the member 4 are made to cooperate. To this end, the rim 1 3 of the basin 3 is placed against the member 4, in particular its first side 8. Finally, the member 4, in particular its second side 10, is bent back over the rim 1 3 in the direction of arrow fin Fig. 2, in order to ensure positive fitting of the basin 3.
Naturally, for the purpose of these operations, the dropped edge 5 of the draining board 2 bears by its free end part 14, in particular its free end against the basin 3.

Claims (8)

1. A metal sink arrangement comprising a draining board, a basin and a member interconnecting the draining board and the basin in a rigid manner, characterised by the fact that the draining board comprises a dropped edge 5 which has a rim which bears against the basin 3.
2. An arrangement according to Claim 1, in which the dropped edge is substantially perpendicular to a main planar portion of the draining board.
3. An arrangement according to Claim 1 or 2, in which the dropped edge has a short length with regard to the depth of the basin.
4. An arrangement according to any one of Claims 1 to 3, in which the tip of the rim of the dropped edge of the draining board bears against the basin.
5. An arrangement according to any one of Claims 1 to 4, in which the dropped edge appears to form an extension of the inside wall surface of the basin.
6. An arrangement according to any one of Claims 1 to 5, in which the dropped edge is pressed against the inside wall surface of the basin at the point of or in the vicinity of a curved portion connecting a rim of the basin to the walls defining the basin.
7. An arrangement according to any one of Claims 1 to 6, in which the member is connected to the draining board by any suitable means or member.
8. A method for the manufacture of a sink arrangement according to Claim 1, comprising the steps of producing a draining board with a dropped edge defining a shape substantially similar to the shape defined by the rim of a basin included in the arrangement and located adjacent said edge whereby a rim of the edge bears against the basin, attaching in a rigid manner, a connecting member to the draining board, causing the basin and the member to cooperate by applying the rim of the basin agains the member, and bending the member over the rim of the basin in order to make the member grip said rim.
