Applying liquids to parts only of materials. - Textile materials such as yarn, thread, and knitted or woven fabrics, are dyed in parts only by injecting a limited quantity of dye solution under pressure into a mass of the material so that the dye penetrates along the line on which it is injected and is absorbed by the adjacent portions of the material. In the case of yarn the treatment is conveniently applied to the material when in the form of cops; in the case of fabrics, a piece may be folded in layers against a flat surface or it may be wound on a roller. The apparatus used consists, of cylinder 15 for the dye solution, provided with a plunger 16, the hollow tail rod 17 of which projects through the cover 18 of the cylinder and is furnished at the end with a needle 25 held in position by a collar 19; the outer end of the collar is flat so as to compress the adjacent parts of the material when the needle is inserted, and the needle itself is provided with one or more grooves 26 which communicate with the hollow rod 17 and the cylinder 15. In use, the needle is inserted into the material, and dye solution is injected by giving a quick short jerk to the cylinder. The injections mav be arranged according to a regular pattern, and differently-coloured dyes may be injected into different portions of the mass. Specification 205,812 is referred to.
