Abstract

A waterproof cover for a riding saddle has pouches on its underside to receive the saddle flaps and oblong openings through which the stirrup leathers and irons can be passed, the openings being protected by waterproof flaps. The cover is made in two parts joined to provide a substantially saddle- shaped cover and is held in position over the saddle by a tensioning cord which passes through tabs spaced around the periphery of the underside of the cover. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Saddle-Dry The Saddle-Dry is a weatherproof covering made from a waterproof PVC and edged in one inch nylon tape and stitched together.
The Saddle-Dry is made in two halves stitched at thB centre with two darts each side to form the cantle of the saddle and exactley follows the contours of a standard leather riding saddle, at the same time this cover has one square incision on each flap of the Saddle-Dry covered by a seven inch by five inch flap edged in one inch nylon, which allows the stirrup leathers and irons to be pulled through thus allowing the rider to use stirrups and leathers in the normal fashion.
The Saddle-Dry therefore enables the rider to rise in adverse conditions and at the same time keep his or her saddle clean and dry.
The Saddle-Dry is secured to the saddle by alternately putting each of saddle flaps into the respective pouch provided on the underside of each flap of the Saddle-Dry, and pulling the top of the Saddle-Dry over the top of the pommel and cantle of the saddle. It is finally secured by elasticated cord loop which passes through twentyfour tabs which are fixed to the underside and edge of the Saddle Dry.
I consider the essential qualities of my Saddle-Dry, is that it covers a riding saddle totally and enables a rider to rise in adverse conditions as well as normal conditions without the fear of staining or marking his or her saddle by water, mud etc. Also my Saddle-Dry does not offend the horse or the rider when in use in any way.
In sincerely believe that there is no weather proof saddle cover which can be ridden on on the market at this time, there are covers to store or keep a saddle in but the Saddle-Dry is specifically designed to be ridden on and at the same time protect the saddle against the elements, thus preserving an expensive investment ie: the saddle.
CLAIMS (18 May 1979) The Saddle-Dry is a cover which protects the saddle from adverse weather conditions and daily wear and tear when being ridden on. It covers the pommel, the cantle, the seat and flaps in fact the total outside surface area of the saddle with a 100% waterproof, weatherproof material.
The Saddle-Dry follows the contours of a riding saddle and allows the flaps of the saddle to be placed in individual pouches provided on either side of the underside flap area of the Saddle-Dry.
The Saddle-Dry allows the stirrup irons and stirrup leathers to be used in the normal fashion by allowing the stirrup irons and leathers, to pass and hang through an opening (incision) on each side of the Saddle-Dry. This opening (incision is in turn covered by a waterproof flap, which prevents water or the elements entering via this opening (incision).
The Saddle-Dry is secured to the saddle by an elasticated cord which runs through tabs equally spaced around the edge and along the edge of the pouch on the underside of the Saddle-Dry.
The Saddle-Dry does not offend the horse or the rider when in use.
The Saddle-Drys function is to protect a riding saddle from the elements and daily wear and tear when being used by the rider.
I believe that if a competitor were to produce a cover for a riding saddle with the same functions and protection that the Saddle-Dry offers, they would indeed be infringing on the inventive idea of the Saddle-Dry.
CLAIMS (30 July 1980) 1. A horse saddle cover, for use when riding a horse in adverse weather conditions; comprising a pair of opposite side members each formed from a piece of waterproof plastics materials and secured together by a seam so contoured that when the cover is placed over a horse saddle the seam will extend from front to rear of the saddle over the upper surface thereof following the contours of the pommel and cantle of the saddle and the side members 11 will overlie side portions of the saddle without creases in the side members, each side member has an arcuate lower edge and at said lower edge is secured to a respective further member of similar material whereby the side member and the further member together form a pouch on the inner face of the side member to receive a respective flap of the saddle, an elastic cord is engaged with the upper edge of each further member and with edge portions of the side members which are not secured to the further members, each side member has an aperture therein through which a stirrup iron and leather can be drawn and a respective flap of similar material to the side member is secured to the side member above the respective aperture and overlying the aperture.
2. A horse saddle cover according to claim 1, wherein the seam is provided in three parts comprising a front upwardly inclined part, a middle upwardly concave part and a rear downwardly inclined part.
3. A horse saddle cover according to claim 1 or claim 2, in which the elastic cord is engaged with the upper edges of the further members and with the edge portions of the side members which are not engaged with the further members by passing through tabs secured to the side members and further side members.
4. A horse saddle cover, for use when riding a horse in adverse weather conditions, substantially as hereinbefore described and
