Abstract

An apparatus for storing and apportioning material, for example a powdered or granular material, comprises a holder (1) for a package (7), the holder having an opening communicating with an apportioning device (2) arranged below the opening, whereby a required quantity of the material can be supplied to a recipient below the apportioning device, the package (7) and the holder (1) being so shaped that a sealing closure of the package is operable with the package in place in the holder. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Apparatus for Storing and Apportioning Material This invention relates to apparatus for storing and apportioning material, for example powdered or granular material. Two main ways are known for storing and then dividing up a material. In one way the material is emptied from a packet or other package into a container which includes an apportioning device and then the empty package is discarded. This has the disadvantage that the material must be moved twice, i.e. once from the packet into the container and then from the apportioning device into a receptacle, for instance a cup or a tea-pot.Further the container has to be provided with an indication of the material which it now contains, particularly when the container has side-by-side compartments for several different materials, for example tea, coffee and cocoa, or several different granular materials, for example salt and sugar. In the second way the package itself has an apportioning device which is glued to the lower part of the package. Such a package is disclosed for instance in Swedish patent specification No. 322,367. The disadvantage of this second way is that the apportioning device itself is discarded when the package is empty and this is a waste of the package raw material.
An object of the invention is to provide an apparatus which largely avoids these disadvantages.
According to the invention apparatus for storing and apportioning material, for example powdered or granular material, comprises a holder, an apportioning device below the holder, and an operable container for the material, the container being sealingly closed by a closure and being mounted in the holder, the holder having an opening communicating with the apportioning device, and the holder and container being so shaped that the closure is operable with the container in position in the holder, the arrangement being such that on opening the closure material flows through the opening into the apportioning device.
In one embodiment of the invention several adjacent openings are made in a row in the lower wall, each opening co-operating with one package. Below each opening a separate apportioning device is arranged in the lower part of the holder. By operating the corresponding apportioning device the contents of any one of the packages can be apportioned. Since the packages as sold on the market have an indication of their contents, separate markings on the apparatus are not necessary.
The invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a side elevation of an embodiment of the apparatus; Fig. 2 is a front elevation: Fig. 3 is a section on line Ill-Ill of Fig. 1: Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a package; and Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation showing an embodiment of apparatus for several packages.
Referring to the drawings, an apparatus apportioning material in a package comprises a holder 1 and an apportioning device 2 attached to the lower part of the holder.
The holder 1 comprises an upper horizontal wall 3 and a lower horizontal wall 4, which are connected to each other by a vertical web 5. In the lower wall 4 is an opening 6, which communicates with the apportioning device 2.
The latter is conventional and need not be described in detail.
The apparatus is used with a package 7, see Fig. 4, in which the package 7 is shown upsidedown, i.e. with its bottom surface 8 turned upwards. In the bottom surface is a strip-like sealing closure 9 with a strip flap 10. The strip flap is folded back over itself and extends out over one edge 11 of the package to form a grip flap 12.
The closure 9 after stripping uncovers an opening in the bottom surface 8, and this opening (not shown), when the package is placed in the holder the right way up, co-operates with the opening 6 of the holder. The height of the package corresponds to the distance between the walls 3 and 4.
The apparatus is used in the following way.
The package 7 is inserted between the upper and lower walls 3, 4 and the holder 1 retains the package, due to the fitting grip between the holder surfaces 3, 4 and 5 and the corresponding surfaces of the package. Now the package is in the position shown by dashed lines in Fig. 1. It will be seen that one of the narrow sides of the package 7 is exposed in the holder. Then the grip flap 12 is gripped between thumb and finger and pulled in the direction 13 so that the strip seal closure is opened and the opening in the bottom surface 8 of the package is uncovered. The closure is discarded. The contents of the package now flow out through the opening in the bottom surface 8 and the opening 6 in the lower wall, and fill the apportioning device 2.By operating a handle 14, for instance a slide or a turning cylinder having grroves in its outer surface, the contents of the package are apportioned. Thus the package serves as a store for the material to be apportioned. Since the package has a marking, represented by the letters ABC, separate marking of the apportioning device is not necessary.
Fig. 5 shows an embodiment of holder to hold three packages, each having a separate apportioning device 2a, 2b, 2c. The holder, as shown in Fig. 1, comprises an upper wall 3 and a lower wall 4, which are connected to each other by a web 5. In the lower wall are three openings 6a, 6b and 6c respectively. Partition walls 1 spa, 1 sub and 1 6a, 1 6b, respectively, define compartments in each of which a package 7 is inserted and fitted into the holder 1. Each package 7 is made in the way shown in Fig. 4.
The embodiment of Fig. 5 is suitable for use in drink automats for instance, or in the home for storage of groceries such as salt, sugar, or other granular materials.
