Abstract

A carton for light bulbs comprises a four-sided box open at the bottom and closed at the top by flaps 10, 11. Sides 4 (not visible) and 6 each have two folds extending from the top edge along sloping lines to opposite corners of the box so that the upper parts of the other two sides 3, 5 can be folded towards one another. Notches 7 are used to retain the bayonet pins of a bayonet lamp, although the carton may be used with screw-ended lamps. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improved Lamp Carton This invention relates to an improved carton for electric lamps and the invention has for its particular object the provision of a carton which will act securely to locate a lamp of the type having a bayonet cap within the carton.
According to the invention there is provided a carton for electric lamps, said carton comprising a cylindrical body of generally rectangular cross section defined by two pairs of oppositely facing side walls and wherein, at one end of said body, the side walls of one of said pairs are provided with respective extension tabs which fold over one another to close said one end, while the side walls of the other of said pairs are folded towards one another in such manner that, at said one end of the body, their distance apart is such that they are able to grip and retain the narrow portion of an electric lamp. Although directed primarily at the housing of bayonet-type lamps, the carton of this invention can also be adapted for other styles of lamp, for example screw-ended.
Preferably, each of said other pair of side walls is formed, at said one end, with a centrally disposed notch into which the bayonet pins of a bayonet-type lamp may be inserted to positively secure the lamp in position.
The carton may be held in this condition with a lamp securely located therein by adhesively securing the tabs together and one over the other.
To facilitate opening the carton the two tabs are preferably connected to their respective sides by a line of perforations.
In a preferred embodiment, the side walls are enabled to fold towards one another by forming, on each of said other pair of side walls, two fold lines which each extend symmetrically from a point at said one end adjacent the side of the notch to a point on the adjacent edge of the side which is located intermediate said one end and the other end, the arrangement being such that inward pressure on the ends of said other pair of side walls will cause the two sides to fold towards one another.
The invention also includes a blank for use in constructing the carton, which blank is shaped and arranged as will be described below with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a blank from which the carton is made; Figure 2 is a perspective view of the carton as partly constructed; Figure 3 is a perspective view of the carton when closed; Figure 4 is a side view, partly in section of the carton of Figure 2 showing a bayonet-type lamp in position; Figure 5 is a section on the line V-V in Figure 4; and Figures 6 and 7 are views equivalent to Figures 1 and 2 respectively showing a modified form of carton.
Referring to Figure 1 the blank 1 there shown comprises four equal portions which are delimited by fold lines 2 to form the four sides 3, 4, 5 and 6 of the carton. The sides 4 and 6 each have, at their upper end, a notch 7 and fold lines 8 and 9 which extend symmetrically from each side of the notch to a point on the side edges, the fold lines 2, intermediate the upper and lower ends. The sides 3 and 5 each have an extension in the form of a tab 10, 11 which is separated from its side by a line of perforations 12.
To hold the blank in tubular form the outer edge of side 6 is provided with a tab 13 which is adhered to the inside of the outer edge of side 3.
In this condition the carton has the appearance shown in Figure 2. The carton is closed by adhering the tabs 10 and 11 one on top of the other as shown in Figure 4, the general appearance of the carton now being as shown in Figure 3.
Finally lamp 14 is now inserted into the carton with its bayonet cap 1 5 uppermost and the upper parts of the sides 3 and 5 are pressed towards each other. This causes the upper parts of the sides 4 and 6 to be deformed inwardly about the fold lines 8 and 9 so that the parts adjacent the notches 7 move towards the lamp cap which if correctly positioned will have its pins 1 6 located in these notches, see Figures 4 and 5.
From the foregoing it will be appreciated that the improved carton when closed operates to hold the lamp securely therein because of the engagement of the bayonet pins 1 6 in the notches 7, while it may be easily opened by tearing off the tabs 10, 11 along the line of perforations 12.
A modified form of carton is shown in Figures 6 and 7, in which the same reference numerals are used where appropriate. In the construction shown in Figures 6 and 7, a rectangular cut out portion 1 7 is formed in the upper edge of sides 4 and 6 extending between the fold lines 8 and 9.
The notch 7, the depth of which is the same as before with respect to the upper edge of the respective side, extends down from the centre of the bottom of cut-out portion 17. This modified construction enables the lamp to be readily removed for testing by first turning the lamp through 900 in the same manner as if removing it from a bayonet socket and then withdrawing. The lamp may be returned to the carton without causing any damage thereto simply by reversing this procedure. The modified construction also aids the use of the carton with screw-end lamps since the bottom of the cut-out portion 17 tends to enter the threads of the lamp, thus retaining it in position.

Claims
