Abstract
204,715. Soc. Anon. d'Applications des Gaz LiquÚfiÚs. Sept. 27, 1922, [Convention date]. Storing under pressure.-The opening and closing of a screw-stoppered capsule or cylinder of compressed or liquefied gas are effeffcted by a coacting screw and nut, the screw being connected to rotate with either the capsule or its stopper, and the nut similar connected with the stopper or capsule accordingly. The relative longitudinal movement of the nut and screw during the opening movement energizes a spring which effects the closure. Fig. 8 shows a form of apparatus in which the capsule 3 is gripped by a ja w 27 capable of sliding on a discharge chamber 1 into which the neck of the capsule passes through a stuffing- box; a nut 25, fixed in relation to the chamber 1, is traversed by a screw 20 carrying a turn-screw 21 which is brought into engagement with the stopper by acting upon the jaw or the nut; a further movement in the same direction turns the screw and opens the capsule; closure is effected by a. spring 26 abutting against the nut and a shoulder on the screw. Fig. 10 shows a form in which the nut 25 is disposed within the discharge chamber 1 and is perforated for escape of gas, and a. sleeve 42 carrying a plastic joint 4 and passing through a stuffing-box 35 into the discharge chamber; a spring 41 maintaining the joint 4 and the stuffing-box gas-tight. Fig. 15 shows a form in which the jaw 27 which holds the capsule is integral with the screw 20, and the turnscrew 21 is integral with the discharge chamber 1, while the nut 25 slides in relation to this chamber. As shown in Fig. 18, the nut 25 slides in the discharge chamber, and the screw 20 is hollow, enclosing the turn-screw 21 integral with the chamber; the jaw 27 is integral with the screw and is screwed to the mouth of the capsule. Fig. 24 shows a working form of apparatus in which a capsule 3 is employed to fill a siphon bottle, the spout 2 of which is held tightly down on a joint 5 on a casing screwed to the neck of the capsule, plastic packing 4 making a tight joint. The nut 25 is secured to a rod 34 sliding without turning, through a stuffing box, and loosely carrying a knob 38; a spring 41 between the knob and the top 36 of the stuffing-box makes the joint tight enough to prevent rotation of the rod and nut. The discharge chamber is made in two parts 30, 31 screwed together, allowing insertion of the nut and screw. In the modification shown in Fig. 25, in which the parts are held together tightly by a cam-operated strap 6, the capsule mouth is pressed against a plastic joint 4 on a hollow member 42 connected by a sleeve piece 31, containing the screw 20 and closed at the top by the perforated nut 25 with the discharge to the siphon spout 2. A plastic joint 35 in the member 42, surrounding the sleeve 31, is held tight by a casing 45, 46. 47, 48 containing a spring 41 abutting on a flange 49 on the discharge chamber 30. The rotation of the capsule mouth on a flat plastic joint, which is involved in some forms of apparatus, may be avoided by making a joint around the cylindrical portion of the mouth as shown in Fig 28, or a member 52, Fig. 29, carrying packing 4, and rotated in the discharge chamber 1 either by friction with the capsule mouth or by connection to the rotating jaw. An injurious degree of force in closing the stopper may be avoided by making some of the connections to be merely frictional.
