Abstract

Exercising apparatus, for jogging, comprises a platform having a presented surface afforded by rows of rollers 17 with each row containing a plurality of rollers, and the rollers being arranged for rotation about substantially horizontal axes, the axes of rotation of the rollers, over at least a portion of the platform, being disposed on an upwardly concave arc. The arc preferably has a radius of curvature of substantially 80 inches, this dimension being related to the natural free running stride of a person of average height. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in exercising apparatus This invention relates to exercising apparatus and is particularly concerned with apparatus for use by persons wishing to attain or retain physical fitness, and by patients in hospitals for physiotherapeutic purposes.
Exercising apparatus is available which comprises a supporting framework including a platform and a handgrip for gripping by a person standing on the platform, the platform having a presented surface afforded by a plurality of rows of rollers with each row containing a plurality of rollers, and the rollers being arranged for rotation about horizontal axes. A person standing on the platform may hold the handgrip and effectively "walk" or "run" on the rollers while remaining in the same position on the platform. Such an arrangement provides exercising apparatus which is of compact robust construction and is relatively inexpensive to manufacture. However a certain amount of practice is required to acquire the technique of walking or running on such apparatus and it is a technique which some people find extremely difficult to master.
The invention sets out to provide a modification of such an apparatus so that less practice and skill is required to use the apparatus properly.
According to the invention there is provided exercising apparatus comprising a platform having a presented surface afforded by rows of rollers with each row containing a plurality of rollers, and the rollers being arranged for rotation about substantially horizontal axes, the axes of rotation of said rollers, over at least a portion of the platform, being disposed on an upwardly concave arc.
It is found that where a portion of the platform is arranged on an upwardly concave arc, in accordance with the invention, the technique of walking or running on the surface of the apparatus is more rapidly acquired so that a person may use the apparatus in a satisfactory manner almost immediately.
Preferably one end of the arc is at the lowermost point thereof. Also the axes of rotation of a plurality of rows of rollers beyond said lowermost end of the arc may lie in a flat plane, which is preferably horizontal.
The arc is preferably an arc of a circle and has a radius of curvature of substantially 80 inches, this dimension being related to the natural free running stride of a person of average height.
The apparatus may include handgrip means for gripping by a person standing on the platform. Although handgrip means are essential with known forms of exercising apparatus, the apparatus according to the invention is so much easier to use that it may be used without such handgrip means.
The following is a more detailed description of one embodiment of the invention, reference being made to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a diagrammatic plan view of an exercising apparatus, and Figure 2 is a side view of the apparatus of Fig. 1.
The apparatus comprises two parallel metal side frame members 10 formed at their front and rear ends with vertical sockets 11 and 1 2 respectively. Foot members 1 3 are received in threaded engagement within the lower ends of the sockets and are adjustable to accommodate unevenness in the floor on which the apparatus rests, or to permit variation in the inclination of the surface of the apparatus to the horizontal.
The feet 1 3 are preferably provided with resilient members to absorb the pounding on the apparatus which occurs when in use.
The lower ends of the legs 1 4 of a Ushaped handgrip 1 5 are received within the upper ends of the front sockets 11 of the side members.
Between the side members 10 extend a series of spindles each of which has its ends mounted in the side members 10 and is supported intermediate its ends by passage through an opening in a central metal rib 16.
Each spindle serves to support a row of twelve rollers 17, there being six rollers on each side of the central rib 16. The rollers are independently rotatable on the spindles and friction and noise reducing washers may be disposed between adjacent rollers. The rollers may be of nylon loaded with a solid lubricant such as molybdenum disulphide sovthat each roller is freely rotatable on its respective supporting spindle.
The spindles on which the rollers are mounted may be disposed approximately one inch apart, the rollers being seven eighths of an inch in diameter and three quarters of an inch long.
As best seen in Fig. 2, the horizontal axes of the spindles of the rows of those rollers which are nearer the handgrip 1 5 lie on an upwardly concave arc so that the presented surface of the apparatus curves upwardly as it extends forwardly towards the handgrip. At the rearward end of the apparatus, from the lowermost point of the arc to the rear edge of the apparatus, the axes of the spindles lie in a flat horizontal plane.
The arc is an arc of a circle and has a radius of curvature of substantially 80 inches, it being found that this is the preferred radius for comfortable use since it is related to the natural free running stride length of a person of average height.
When a user of the apparatus is standing on the platform his weight is supported by the rollers and the curvature of the presented surface of the platform is such that as the foot is moved forwardly and lowered onto the rollers it tends to siide backwardly so that the user must walk or run to maintain his position on the platform.
In practice the user walks or runs while holding the handgrip although the arcuate shaping of the presented surface in accordance with the invention will also allow use of the apparatus without a handgrip.
