Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to sliding doors This invention relates to sliding doors of the kind comprising a pair of doors constrained to slide towards or away from one another to close or open a doorway in a wall of a vehicle or building and is especially, but not exclusively, concerned with sliding doors for use in railway rolling stock or road vehicles.
It is an object of the present invention to provide for use in a doorway in a wall of a vehicle or building, an improved sliding door installation which is simpler and less expensive than sliding door installations hitherto proposed and used, and which can be more readily maintained or repaired.
In the improved sliding door installation in accordance with the invention, the doors are supported in part by the vehicle body or building and in part by one another in such a way that, throughout the sliding motion of the doors to open and close the doorway, the doors are constrained to slide along, and are maintained substantially parallel to, a common rectilinear axis.
To provide for the pair of sliding doors to be supported in part by one another, preferably each door of the pair has at or near its upper edge an elongate member which extends from, and substantially parallel to the direction of sliding motion of, the door towards the other door of the pair and which has mounted at or near its free end a guide engaging an elongate track extending across, and along the elongate member of, said other door, the lengths of the elongate members and the tracks being such that guides engage the tracks throughout the sliding motion of the doors to open and close the doorway.
To provide for the pair of sliding doors to be supported in part by the vehicle body or building, preferably each door of the pair has at or near its upper edge an elongate track which extends across the door and substantially parallel to the direction of sliding motion and which is engaged by at least one guide directly or indirectly mounted on the vehicle body or building.
Preferably, each guide is a roller or wheel mounted with its axis of rotation substantially normal to the direction of sliding motion and each elongate track includes a surface or surfaces on which the associated roller or wheel can rotate during sliding motion of the doors.
The rollers or other guides by means of which the doors are supported in part by the vehicle body or building preferably are mounted on the vehicle body or building above the doorway, for example on a beam which is supported above the doorway by the vehicle body or building and which extends substantially parallel to the direction of sliding motion.
Preferably, drive means coupled to the doors for imparting synchronised sliding motion to the pair of doors is directly or indirectly mounted on the vehicle body or building above the doorway, for example on the beam carrying the rollers or other guides by means of which the doors are supported in part by the vehicle body or building.
The arrangement by which the sliding doors are supported in accordance with the present invention is especially, but not exclusively, suitable for use in a sliding door installation in which the doors, in addition to sliding towards or away from one another, are also caused to move transversely to the direction of sliding motion, the arrangement being such that, as the doors slide apart to open the doorway, they are caused to move transversely out of the doorway and alongside a face of the wall (usually, but not necessarily, the outer face of the wall) and, as the doors slide towards one another to close the doorway, they are caused to move transversely into the doorway and substantially flush with the wall. Sliding doors of this kind are usually known, and hereinafter will be referred to, as "sliding plug doors".
In a sliding plug door installation in accordance with the present invention, preferably the rollers or other guides by means of which the doors are supported are mounted on a beam which is separately formed with respect to, and is supported above the doorway by, the vehicle body or building and which is constrained to move in a direction transverse to the direction of sliding motion, the arrangement being such that, as the doors are caused to slide apart, the beam moves transversely outwardly from the doorway so that the doors slide alongside a face of the wall of the vehicle body or building and, as the doors are caused to slide towards one another, the beam moves transversely inwardly to bring the doors into the doorway and substantially flush with the wall.In a preferred embodiment, the beam extends substantially parallel to the direction of sliding motion of the doors and the transverse motion of the beam is in a direction substantially normal to the direction of sliding motion.
Preferably, also, the beam is pivotally mounted on the vehicle body or building about an axis extending substantially parallel to the direction of sliding motion. Drive means for causing the beam to pivot orotherwide move in such a direction asto move the doors transversely outwardly from, or transversely inwardly into, the doorway preferably is so coupled to the drive means for imparting sliding motion to the doors that the pivoting and sliding motions are appropriately synchronised.
Where necessary, a shroud or pelmet may depend from the vehicle bódy or building above the doors way to overlie the beam and elongate members of the doors when the doors are in the open position and protect them from the weather.
To prevent tilting of one or each door when the doors are in or approaching the open position, preferably the elongate member of at least one of the doors has at or near its free end a guide engaging the beam or the vehicle body or building, or an elongate track carried by the beam or the vehicle body or building, and/orthe beam may support at or near its mid-point at least one guide which engages an endless track extending along the elongate member of one of the doors.
Preferably, each door is also constrained by suitable guide means to prevent the doorfrom tilting about a substantially horizontal axis substantially parallel to the direction of sliding motion. Such guide means is preferably at or near the lower edge of the door and preferably does not exert any influence on the door in a vertical direction.
The invention is further illustrated by a description, by way of example, of a preferred sliding door installation for use on a railway carriage and a preferred sliding plug door installation for use on a railway carriage with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a diagrammatic front elevation of the sliding door installation; Figure 2 is a fragmental perspective view of the drive means coupled to the doors of the installation shown in Figure 1 for imparting synchronised sliding motion to the doors, and Figure 3 is a fragmental perspective view of the drive means of the sliding plug door installation for imparting synchronised sliding motion to the doors.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, the sliding door installation comprises a pair of doors 1,1' for closing a doorway in the side wall of the railway carriage and a beam 11 which is separately formed with respect to the doors and the railway carriage and which is mounted above the doorway in such a way that it extends substantially parallel to the direction of sliding motion of the doors.
Door 1 has near its upper edge an elongate member 2 which extends from, and substantially parallel to the direction of sliding motion of, the doors towards the door 1 ' and the door 1 ' has near its upper edge a similar elongate member 2' which extends towards the door 1. Each elongate member 2,2' incorporates an elongate track 3,3', the elongate track 3 being engaged by a roller 4' mounted at the free end of the elongate member 2' and the elongate track 3' being engaged by a roller 4 mounted at the free end of the elongate member 2. Adjacent the upper edge of each door 1,1' is an elongate track 5,5' each of which is engaged by one of two rollers 12,12' mounted at the opposite ends of the beam 11.The elongate member 2 also has mounted at its free end a roller 7 which engages an elongate track 8 on the undersurface of the beam 11 and which serves to prevent tilting of the doors 1,1' when they are in or are approaching the open position. By this arrangement the doors are supported in part by the railway carriage body via the beam 11 and in part by one another in such a way that, throughout the sliding motion of the doors to open and close the doorway, the doors are constrained to slide along, and are maintained substantially parallel to, a common rectilinear axis.
Each door has at its lower edge guide means (not shown) to prevent tilting of the door about a horizontal axis extending parallel to the direction of sliding motion. Drive means for imparting synchronised sliding motion to the doors 1,1' is carried by the beam 11 and comprises an endless belt 14 arranged to travel around two rollers 15 mounted at opposite ends of the beam. The part of the belt 14 on one side of the rollers 15 is attached to the door 1 by a bracket 16 and part of the belt on the other side of the rollers 15 is attached to the door 1' by a bracket 16'. The belt 14 is driven to impart synchronised sliding motion to the doors 1,1' by a fluid-operated piston 17 which works in a cylinder 18 carried by the beam 11 and which at its forward end is secured to the bracket 16.
The sliding plug door installation shown in Figure 3 comprises a pair of doors 21,21' for closing a doorway in the side wall of the railway carriage and a beam 31 which is separately formed with respect to the doors and the railway carriage and which is pivotally suspended from the carriage above the doorway in such a way that it extends substantially parallel to, the direction of sliding motion of the doors.
As in the sliding door installation shown in Figures 1 and 2, door 21 has near its upper edge an elongate member which extends from, and substantially parallel to the direction of sliding motion of, the door towards the door 21' and the door 21' has near its upper edge a similar elongate member which extends towards the door 21. Each elongate member incorporates an elongate track, the elongate track of each elongate member being engaged by a roller mounted at the free end of the other elongate member. Adjacent the upper edge of each door 21,21' is an elongate track, each of which is engaged by one of two rollers mounted at the opposite ends of the beam 31.The elongate member on the door 21 also has mounted at its free end a roller which engages an elongate track on the under-surface of the beam 31 and which serves to prevent tilting of the doors when they are in or are approaching the open position. By this arrangement the doors are supported in part by the railway carriage body via the beam 31 and in part by one another in such a way that, throughout the sliding motion of the doors to open and close the doorway, the doors are constrained to slide along, and are maintained substantially parallel to, a common rectilinear axis.
In order that each door 21,21 ' can also be guided at its lower edge, each door has near its lower edge a track, the track on each door being engaged by a roller (not shown carried by an arm pivotally mounted near the floor of the carriage on one side of the doorway.
Drive means for imparting synchronised sliding motion to the doors 21,21' is carried by the beam 31 and comprises an endless belt 34 arranged to travel around two rollers 35 mounted at the opposite ends of the beam. The part of the belt 34 on one side of the rollers 35 is attached to the door 21 by a bracket 36 and the part of the belt on the other side of the rollers 35 is attached to the door 21' by a bracket 36'. The belt 34 is driven to impart synchronised sliding motion to the doors 21,21' by a fluid-operated piston 37 which works in a cylinder 38 carried by the beam 31 and which at its forward end is secured to the bracket 36.
The beam 31 is pivotally suspended from the carriage above the doorway by a linkage 39 which is pivotally attached to opposite ends of the beam and which is free to pivot in brackets 40 secured to the carriage body above the doorway. Pivotal transverse motion of the beam 31 to move the doors 21,21' transversely outwardly from, or inwardly towards, the doors is effected by a fluid-operated piston (not shown) which works in a cylinder and which is secured to the rear of the beam.
Actuation of the fluid-operated piston 37 and of the fluid-operated piston for effecting transverse pivotal motion to the beam 31 is under a common control so that the sliding and transverse motions of the doors 21,21' occur concurrently. As doors 21,21' are caused to slide apart by actuation of the piston 37, the beam 31 is caused to pivot transversely outwardly by its associated piston so that the doors slide alongside the outer face of the carriage. As the doors 21,21' are caused to slide towards one another by retraction of the piston 37, retraction of the piston associated with the beam 31 causes the beam to pivot transversely inwardly to bring the doors into the doorway and substantially flush with the carriage wall.
The improved sliding door installation of the present invention has the important advantage that, because the drive means coupled to the doors for imparting synchronised sliding motion to the pair of doors is directly or indirectly mounted on the vehicle body or building above the doorway, maintenance or repair of the drive means can be readily effected without the necessity of gaining access into the spaces within the wall of the vehicle or building into which the doors usually slide.
