As the doors slide apart, the beam moves transversely outwardly from the doorway so that the doors slide alongside the outer face of the vehicle or building; as the doors slide towards one another, the beam moves transversely inwardly to bring the doors into the doorway. Preferably, the drive means affecting transverse motion of the beam and the drive means imparting synchronised sliding motion to the doors are themselves synchronised. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or Relating to Sliding Doors This invention relates to sliding doors of the kind comprising a pair of doors constrained to slide towards or away from one another to close or open a doorway in a wall of a vehicle or building and is especially, but not exclusively, concerned with sliding doors for use in railway rolling stock or road vehicles.
The invention is particularly concerned with sliding doors of the aforesaid kind, which in addition to sliding towards or away from one another, are also caused to move transversely to the direction of sliding motion, the arrangement being such that, as the doors slide apart to open the doorway, they are caused to move transversely out of the doorway and alongside a face of the wall (usually, but not necessarily, the outer face of the wall) and, as the doors slide towards one another to close the doorway, they are caused to move transversely into the doorway and substantially flush with the wall. Sliding doors of this kind are usually known, and hereinafter will be referred to, as "sliding plug doors".
According to the present invention, in an improved sliding plug door installation for use in a doorway in a wall of a vehicle or building, drive means for imparting synchronised sliding motion to the pair of doors is mounted on a beam which is separately formed with respect to, and is supported above the doorway by, the vehicle body or building and which is constrained to move in a direction transverse to the direction of sliding motion of the doors, the arrangement being such that, as the doors are caused to slide apart by said drive means, the beam is moved transversely outwardly from the doorway so that the doors slide alongside a face of the wall of the vehicle body or building and, as the doors are caused to slide towards one another by said drive means, the beam is moved transversely inwardly to bring the doors into the doorway and substantially flush with the wall.
Preferably, drive means for effecting said transverse motion of the beam is so coupled to said drive means for imparting synchronised sliding motion to the doors that the transverse motion of the beam and the sliding motion of the doors are themselves appropriately synchronised.
Such synchronisation may be effected, for example, by means of a cam-track and suitable linkage or by any other suitable arrangement.
Transverse motion of the beam may be assisted by an electric motor or by a fluid-operated piston working in a cylinder thereby to ensure rapid opening and effective closing of the doors against the door seals. In some circumstances the drive means for effecting transverse motion of the beam may be independent of the drive means for imparting synchronised sliding motion to the doors and may be electrically or fluid operated and controlled by sequencing switches or valves.
In a preferred embodiment, the beam extends substantially parallel to the direction of sliding motion of the doors and the transverse movement of the beam is in a direction substantially normal to the direction of sliding motion. Preferably, also, the beam is pivotally mounted on the vehicle body or building about an axis extending substantially parallel to the direction of sliding motion.
The drive means for imparting synchronised sliding motion to the doors may take any convenient form but preferably it comprises an endless belt arranged to travel around two rollers spaced along the length of the beam, the part of the belt on one side of the rollers being attached to one door of the pair of doors and the part of the belt on the other side of the rollers being attached to the other door of the pair, and activator means for driving the belt around the rollers to cause the pair of doors to move towards or away from one another. The activator means for driving the endless belt may be an electric motor or other rotary activator device driving one or both of the rollers or it may be a fluid-operated piston working in a cylinder and secured to one side of the endless belt or to one of the doors.
The arrangement for controlling sliding motion of plug doors hereinbefore described may be used or adapted for use with any known sliding plug door installation but it is especially suitable for use with a sliding plug door installation as described and claimed in the Specification of our co-pending Patent Application No. 7941079 filed on the same day as the present application.
The invention is further illustrated by a description, by way of example, of a preferred sliding plug door installation for use on a railway carriage with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a diagrammatic front elevation of the sliding plug door installation, and Figure 2 is a fragmental perspective view of the drive means coupled to the doors of the installation for imparting synchronised sliding motion to the doors Referring to the drawings, the sliding plug door installation comprises a pair of doors 1, 1' for closing a doorway in the side wall of the railway carriage and a beam 11 which is separately formed with respect to the doors and the railway carriage and which is pivotally suspended from the carriage above the doorway in such a way that it extends substantially parallel to, and is free to pivot about an axis extending substantially parallel to, the direction of sliding motion of the doors.
Door 1 has near its upper edge an elongate member 2 which extends from, and substantially parallel to the direction of sliding motion of, the door towards the door 1' and the door 1' has near its upper edge a similar elongate member 2' which extends towards the door 1. Each elongate member 2, 2' incorporates an elongate track 3, 3', the elongate track 3 being engaged by a roller 4' mounted at the free end of the elongate member 2' and the elongate track 3' being engaged by a roller 4 mounted at the free end of the elongate member 2. Adjacent the upper edge of each door 1, 1' is an elongate track 5, 5', each of which is engaged by one of two rollers 12, 12' mounted at the opposite ends of the beam 11.
The elongate member 2 also has mounted at its free end a roller 7 which engages an elongate track 8 on the undersurface of the beam 11 and which serves to prevent tilting of the doors 1, 1' when they are in or are approaching the open position. By this arrangement the doors are supported in part by the railway carriage body via the beam 11 and in part by one another in such a way that, throughout the sliding motion of the doors to open and close the doorway, the doors are constrained to slide along, and are maintained substantially parallel to, a common rectilinear axis.
In order that each door 1, 1' can also be supported at its lower edge, each door has near its lower edge a track 6, 6', the track 6 being engaged by a roller (not shown) carried by an arm pivotally mounted near the floor of the carriage on one side of the doorway and the track 6' being engaged by a roller (not shown) carried by an arm pivotally mounted near the floor of the carriage on the other side of the doorway.
Drive means for imparting synchronised sliding motion to the doors 1, 1' is carried by the beam 11 and comprises an endless belt 14 arranged to travel around two rollers 1 5 mounted at opposite ends of the beam. The part of the belt 14 on one side of the rollers 1 5 is attached to the door 1 by a bracket 1 6 and the part of the belt on the other side of the rollers 1 5 is attached to the door 1' by a bracket 16'. The belt 14 is driven to impart synchronised sliding motion to the doors 1, 1' by a fluid-operated piston 1 7 which works in a cylinder 1 8 carried by the beam 11 and which at its foward end is secured to the bracket 1 6.
The beam 11 is pivotally suspended from the carriage above the doorway by a linkage 19 which is pivotally attached to opposite ends of the beam and which is free to pivot in brackets 20 secured to the carriage body above the doorway.
Pivotal transverse motion of the beam 11 to move the doors 1, 1' transversely outwardly from, or inwardly towards, the doorway is effected by a fluid-operated piston (not shown) which works in a cylinder and which is secured to the rear of the beam.
Actuation of the fluid-operated piston 1 7 and of the fluid-operated piston for effecting transverse pivotal motion to the beam 11 is under a common control so that the sliding and transverse motions of the doors 1, 1' occur concurrently. As doors 1, 1' are caused to slide apart by actuation of the piston 1 7, the beam 11 is caused to pivot transversely outwardly by its associated piston so that the doors slide alongside the outer face of the carriage. As the doors 1, 1' are caused to slide towards one another by retraction of the piston 1 7, retraction of the piston associated with the beam 11 causes the beam to pivot transversely inwardly to bring the doors into the doorway and substantially flush with the carriage wall.
