Abstract
203,835. McQuown, S. H. July 10, 1922. Testing golf balls.-Apparatus for testing golf balls comprises in combination a device for ascertaining the sphericity of the balls and a device for determining ther resiliency with or without a spring balance for measuring the weight of the balls. In a cabinet 1 is mounted a bracket A<11> which carries a tripod stand A<9> having an upright arm on which is pivoted a dial support A<3> and an indicating arm A<4>. The lower ends of the support and arm are curved as shown and are provided with pivoted gauge blocks A<8> adapted to maintain a slight pressure on the ball by means of a spring A<5>, the closing in of the blocks A<8> being limited by projecting ears on the upright arm of the stand. The resiliency is tested by measuring the rebound from a hard surface at the bottom of the cabinet, and the device consists of a two-part platform 11, in a truly horizontal position, upon which the ball is placed. The platform is opened by pulling down a rod 20 by means of an external finger piece 23. This rotates a bell-crank, which causes a horizontal rod 3 to descend and to rotate by means of a system of links, the axes of the two parts of the platform. The ball or balls on the platform then fall to the bottom of the cabinet, the resiliency being estimated by. the height of the rebound which is visually determined by means of horizontal graduations on the back of the cabinet. The spring balance B<2> is graduated in pennyweights, the weight of a standard ball being shown distinctively.
