Abstract

Apparatus for cutting the spines of books comprises a pressure sensor 8 associated with an exhaust housing 2 in which is mounted a milling tool 1 and which is connected through a duct 5 with a suction device 4. The sensor may alternatively be connected directly to the duct 5. When the depression required in the exhaust housing 2 falls below a predetermined value, for example on clogging of the duct 5 a relay 12 is actuated through an electrical contact 11 by the pressure sensor 8 and the supply to the main drive of, for example, a slip-folding and glue-binding machine is interrupted, thereby preventing damage to the milling tool. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Apparatus for the use in the manufacture of books The present invention relates to an apparatus for use in the manufacture of books.
It is known to suck away paper shavings milled off from the book spines. These paper shavings, which are produced in very large quantities, occasionally lead to clogging of the shaving exhaust system and as a result damage in the milling region can occur through continual operation of for example a slipfolding and glue-binding machine and the consequently continually occuring paper shavings.
It is known in central exhaust installations to provide an optical and acoustical signal when clogging of a duct of the exhaust system occurs. This has, however, the disadvantage that although it indicates when clogging took place, damage at the milling heads of for example a slip-folding and glue-binding machine can however only be prevented when manual switching-off of the slip-folding and glue-binding machine is undertaken. No protective devices are known, which on a disturbance in the shavings exhaust system of for example a slip-folding and glue-binding machine effectually hinder or prevent damage in the milling region.
According to the present invention there is provided an apparatus for use in the manufacture of books, comprising a tool for cutting book spines, means for sucking cuttings from the tool, and sensor means disposed to detect in use a predetermined decrease in the suction depression caused by an accumulation of the cuttings.
The sensor means may be spaced from the tool and electrical switch means being connected to the sensor means and actuable by the sensor means on the decrease in the suction depression exceeding a predetermined amount.
The apparatus may comprise a housing disposed about the tool, the sensor means being so connected to the housing as to be responsive to the suction depression in the space within the housing.
The apparatus may comprise relay means connected to the switch means and connectible to book block advancing means to stop advancement of book blocks on the decrease in the suction depression exceeding the predetermined amount.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be more particularly described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawing the single figure of which shows an apparatus embodying the present invention.
A milling head 1 to be protected is arranged underneath a book block conveying path (not shown) and rotates in an exhaust bowl 2. It is driven by a motor 3. The book blocks brought forward on the book block conveying path by the advancing motion of a slip-folding and glue-binding machine are seized by the milling head 1 and milled off along their spines. The paper shavings produced are conveyed through the duct 5 into a bunker 6 by the pressure depression produced by a fan 4. The exhaust bowl 2 is provided with a bore 7, into which a pressure sensor or measuring device 8 is either inserted directly or via a short connecting member 9.
The under-pressure produced by the fan 4 and acting in the exhaust bowl 2 is measured by this pressure measuring deviceS. If a disturbance occurs in the exhaust system 4, 5 and 6, be it for example through a defect at the fan 4 or as a result of clogging of the duct 5, this has the effect of lowering the underpressure in the exhaust bowl 2. When this pressure depression in the exhaust bowl 2 falls below the permissible limiting value, the pointer 10 of the measuring device 8 also falls and a relay 12 is actuated by way of the contact device 11. Thereby, the electrical supply 13 to the main drive of the slip-folding and glue-binding machine is interrupted.
Further advancement of the book blocks can no longer take place and no paper shavings are any longer produced by the milling head 1. Thereby, the danger of clogging of the exhaust bowl 2 is eliminated and destruction of the milling head 1 is prevented.
When the originating disturbance is eliminated and the fan 4 has again produced the required pressure depression the contacts of the contact device 11 are again opened bythe pressure measuring deviceS, whereby the relay 12 drops off and the supply 13 to the control circuit of the main drive of the slip-folding and glue-binding machine is again closed. The slip-folding and glue-binding machine is again ready for operation.
The pressure measuring device 8 can also be connected to the duct 5 either directly of through the connecting member 9 which likewise is subject to a depression.
