Abstract
203,631. Marriage, E. March 21, 1923. Clutches, friction, of the type in which two members are caused to grip a third by coaxial screw-and-nut means operated by a longitudinally-sliding sleeve having helical slots coacting with pins on the nut, have the two friction members keyed together and to the shaft, while the nut can rotate relatively to them. A doubleconed member 3, secured to a shaft or, as shown, formed as a driving or driven pulley, coacts with a cone 1 keyed to a driven or driving shaft 4 and with a cone 2 slidably keyed on the boss of the cone 1. A flanged nut 8, co-operating with a thread 7 on the part 1, is axially located with rotary freedom relatively to the cone 2 by a ring 11 and recess 10, and is provided with a pair of studs 16 carrying anti-friction rollers 15. The rollers coact with helical slots 17 in an operating- sleeve 12, slidably keyed on the boss of the cone 1. Axial movement of the sleeve 12 in either direction rotates the nut 8 to engage or disengage the clutch. Wear may be taken up by forming duplicate holes in the nut 8 to enable the position of the studs 16 to be changed, or by providing duplicate key-ways in the member 12. The cones may be covered with friction material. The actuating-means may be applied also to multiple-plate clutches.
