Abstract
203,494. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (General Electric Co.). Aug. 11, 1922. Plug couplings; carrying conductors through partitions.- An electric terminal comprising an electric conductor extending through an opening is secured therein by fibrous insulation surrounding the conductor and cement between the insulated conductor and the wall of the casing. The conductor may have an enlargement, constituted for example by a wrapping of wire, which is surrounded by the fibrous insulation, for example insulating tape such as oiled cambric. As applied to a detachable plug coupling for an oil fuse in a metallic casing having downwardly-directing projections and with threaded openings 5 into which one end 6 of a pipe union is screwed, a U-shaped copper rod or wire extends from the binding-post 11 and is provided at its outer end with a sleeve contact 12 to engage a split plug 13 secured to a cable end 14. The rod 10 is anchored to the casing and insulated therefrom in the following manner : A wrapping of wire 15 is soldered or welded to a point just above the opening 5, several thicknesses of fibrous insulating tape are wrapped about the rod and its enlargement and a sleeve 17 of bakelite is slipped over the contact sleeve 12 and the tape up to the enlargement. A short paper sleeve 18 supports the sleeve 17 in the bore of the pipe union. The rough surface of the inner wall of the projection 4 is coated with shellac varnish and the conductor and its associated parts are sealed and united to the casing by a cement filling 20 of artificial resin or other substance capable of resisting weather and temperature effects, which is poured through a hole 19 into the pocket of the projection 4. The sheathing of the cable end is wiped to a brass pipe 8 and a sleeve 21 of bakelite is forced thereunto so that it may extend freely into the pipe union with its upper end adjacent the paper sleeve 18 and telescope with the bakelite sleeve 17, thus providing ample creepage surface.
