Abstract

A lorry is provided with a tilting driving cab actuated by tilting apparatus comprising a single-acting or double- acting, controlledly actuable fluid cylinder. The cylinder (8), which is preferably a hydraulic cylinder, has its pivot mounting points provided on the driving cab and chassis (3) of the vehicle respectively. The cylinder (8) is a single-stage cylinder, and the pivot mounting point of the cylinder is associated with the spring suspension mounting means (4, 12) of the vehicle. Preferably the spring suspension mounting means (4, 12) is provided with a pin (12) of sufficient length to form a pivot mounting point (10) for the hydraulic cylinder (8). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to vehicles provided with tilting driving cabs This invention relates to vehicles provided with tilting driving cabs.
More particularly, the invention relates to a driving cab tilting apparatus having a single-acting or double-acting, controlledly actuable fluid cylinder whose pivot mounting points are provided on the driving cab and on the chassis of the vehicle respectively.
The manufacturers of driving cabs always suffer from considerable difficulties in finding a suitable mounting point for the cylinder for tilting the driving cab. The reason for this is that the pivot mounting point should be as low as possible and indeed should be substantially lower than the chassis of the vehicle, e.g. lorry. In order to avoid these difficulties, the tilting cylinders used are in the form of telescopic cylinders which can then be directly connected to the chassis.
As telescopic cylinders are substantially more expensive than single-stage cylinders, the present invention is based on the problem of using a single-stage hydraulic cylinder instead of the telescopic cylinders which have been used hitherto, and associating the pivot mounting point of the singlestage hydraulic cylinder with the spring suspension mounting means of the vehicle. This problem is satisfactorily solved in this way. It is desirable for the pin of the spring suspension mounting means to be increased in length and to be formed as a pivot mounting point for the hydraulic cylinder.
The invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to an embodiment which is shown diagrammatically in the drawing, in which: Figure 1 shows a side view of a part of the driving cab, with the single-stage hydraulic cylinder which is pivotally connected thereto and whose other pivot mounting point is associated with the spring suspension mounting means, and Figure2 is a side view of a part of Figure 1, showing the chassis of the spring suspension mounting means and a part of the single-stage hydraulic cylinder.
The driving cab 1 of a lorry (not shown) is mounted pivotally about a horizontal axis 2 in per se known manner, above the lorry chassis 3. Secured to the chassis 3 is a spring suspension mounting means 4, being secured in this embodiment by screw connections 5 and 6. The piston rod 7 which is connected to a piston (not shown) of a single-stage hydraulic cylinder 8 is pivotally connected to a mounting position 9 of the driving cab land the pivot mounting position 10 is associated with the mounting position 11 of a leaf spring (not shown) which is held by a pin 12. The pin 12 is of sufficient length to extend at one end beyond the mounting position 11 whereby it forms the pivot mounting position 10 of the hydraulic cylinder 8.Aflange 13 is provided on the pin 12 at this location, and a snap ring 14 orthe like holds the pivot mounting of the hydraulic cylinder in place and prevents it from coming loose. This arrangement provides that the pivot mounting position of the hydraulic cylinder, which is remote from the position at which it is connected to the driving cab, is at a sufficiently low position so that a single-stage hydraulic cylinder is capable of pivoting the driving cab up and down.
The cylinder 8, which need not be hydraulically operated, may be replaced by a double-acting cylinder.
1. A driving cab tilting apparatus having a con trolledly actuable fluid cylinder whose pivot mount ing points are provided on the driving cab and on the chassis of the vehicle respectively, characterised in that the cylinder is a single-stage cylinder and the pivot mounting point of the cylinder is associated with the spring suspension mounting means of the vehicle.
2. A driving cab tilting apparatus according to Claim 1, characterised in that the spring suspension mounting means is provided with a pin of sufficient length to form a pivot mounting point for the cylinder.
3. A driving cab tilting apparatus according to Claim 1 or 2, wherein the cylinder comprises a hydraulic cylinder.
4. Avehicle provided with a tilting driving cab actuated by apparatus as claimed in Claim 1,2 or 3.
5. A driving cab tilting apparatus substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accom panying drawings.
6. A vehicle provided with driving cab tilting apparatus as claimed in Claim 5.
