Abstract
A pleated tubular filter element 1 having scaling rings 4 formed integrally therewith is made by applying adhesive to each longitudinal edge portion of one face of a strip of sheet filter material; folding the strip in zig-zag fashion about a series of spaced transverse fold lines to form an assembly of a series of pleats 2 the ends of each of which are individually sealed by the apposition of said adhesive 3 on the two parts of each pleat; applying a continuous strip of elastomeric sealing material to each longitudinal edge of the assembly so that said sealing strip overlies the sealed pleat ends; folding the assembly of pleats into tubular form; and joining the two ends of the assembly and the ends 5 of sealing strips to each other with adhesive or clips to form a cylindrical filter element with sealing rings, formed by the sealing strips, on each end thereof. The assembly may be folded so that the sealing rings are at the inner or the outer periphery of the element. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Fluid filter elements and their manufacture
This invention relates to filter elements for the filtration of fluids and more particularly to filter elements formed from a strip of sheet filter material folded in zig-zag fashion and formed into a hollow cylindrical filter element. Such filter elements find a particular use in the filtration of fluids in internal combustion engines.
In this specification the term "pleat" is used to denote the structure formed by folding a strip of material upon itself.
From one aspect, the present invention is a method of making hollow cylindrical filter elements which comprises applying adhesive to each longitudinal edge portion of one face of a strip of sheet filter material; folding the strip in zig-zag fashion about a series of spaced transverse fold lines to form an assembly of a series of pleats the ends of each of which are individually sealed by the opposition of said adhesive on the two parts of each pleat; at opposite edges of the assembly, applying a continuous strip of elastomeric sealing material along those portions of said one face of the strip which form the junctions between adjacent sealed pleat ends, so that said sealing strip also overlies the sealed pleat ends immediately adjacent said junctions; folding the assembly of pleats into hollow cylindrical form; and joining the two ends of the assembly and the ends of the sealing strips to each other to form a hollow cylindrical filter element with seal rings on each end thereof.
From another aspect, the invention is a filter element comprising a strip of sheet filter material with adhesive applied to each longitudinal edge portion of one face of said strip, said strip being folded in zig-zag fashion about a series of spaced transverse fold lines to form an assembly of a series of pleats the ends of each of which are individually sealed by the opposition of the adhesive on the two parts of each pleat, said assembly of pleats being folded into hollow cylindrical form and the two ends of the assembly being joined together, each end of said hollow cylindrical assembly having, adhesively secured to those portions of said one face of the strip which form the junctions between adjacent sealed pleat ends, a strip of elastomeric sealing material which also overlies the sealed pleat ends immediately adjacent said junction, the ends of said sealing strip being co-terminous with the ends of said assembly of pleats and two ends of each said sealing strip being secured to each other.
The assembly of pleats may be folded so that the sealing strips are at the outer periphery of the tubular filter elements; or the assembly may be folded so that the sealing strips are at the inner periphery of the tubular filter element.
The two ends of the assembly of pleats may be secured together with adhesive or with clips or other means; and the two ends of the sealing strip may be brought into sealing abutment with each other by the endwise compression applied by joining the two ends of the assembly together; alternatively, or additionally, the two ends of the sealing strips may be secured with adhesive.
In carrying the invention into effect according to one preferred embodiment thereof a strip of synthetic resin impregnated filter paper formed with a series of regularly spaced transverse fold lines thereon has applied thereto a strip of adhesive along each longitudinal edge portion of the strip on one face thereof, the strip then being folded about the fold lines to form a plurality of accordian pleats the two halves of each pleat being sealed to each other by the opposition of the adhesive on the two halves of the pleat so that the ends of each pleat are sealed separately from adjacent pleats.
The construction of an assembly of pleats in this way is described in more detail in the specification of our prior British patent 848 129. The assembly of pleats thus formed then has applied thereto, at opposite edges of the assembly, along those portions of the strip which form the junctions between adjacent pleat ends, and on that face of the strip which bears said adhesive, a strip of elastomeric sealing material, the sealing strip being applied so that it also overlies the sealed pleat ends immediately adjacent said junction.The assembly with the strips of sealing material applied therealong is then cut into suitable lengths and the two ends of the length so cut off then brought together, the assembly being formed into hollow cylindrical form and the two end pleats are then secured to each other, as by adhesive, clips or otherwise, and the ends of each of the two sealing strips are joined to each other, conveniently by adhesive.
The sealing strips may be applied in a continuous operation by feeding the pleated strip - as it comes off a machine which forms spacer formations and fold lines thereon, applies adhesive to the strip and then folds it into a continuous pleated strip - on to a revolving horizontal drum having at opposite edges thereof channels into which the two components of a foam plastic sealing material are injected at a point slightly in advance of the place at which the pleated strip makes contact with the drum, a vibratory presser foot being arranged so as to press the edges of the pleated strip into engagement with the sealing material in the channels. At a further point in the path of the drum means are provided to detach the pleated strip, with the sealing material adhering thereto, from the drum.
The assembly of pleats may be folded so that the sealing strips are either at the inner or the outer periphery of the element, as desired, the elasticity of the elastomeric sealing material accommodating itself to the curvature of the element at its inner or outer periphery.
As an alternative to the method described above, the sheet filter material, after being formed into an assembly of series of pleats may be cut into appropriate lengths and the strips of sealing material may be applied not only lengthwise of the cut-off assembly but also transversely along each end pleat thereof so that the two ends of the assembly may then be joined together with adhesive along the two transverse portions of elastomeric sealing material applied to the end pleats.
The above described methods of manufacture of filter elements provide a substantial saving in costs of manufacture and assembly, as they avoid the necessity of first forming the elements into hollow cylindrical form and then separately applying sealing rings first to one end and then to the other end of the element.
The invention is illustrated in Figures 1 to 4 of the accompanying drawings which show, in diagrammatic perspective, stages in the manufacture of filter elements according to the invention.
Figure 1 shows a strip of filter paper formed into an assembly 1 of accordion pleats 2 with sealed ends 3 and with a strip 4 of elastomeric sealing material applied to opposite sides and ends of one face of the panel - form assembly so that the strip 4 projects slightly beyond the sealed pleat ends. The sealing material may be applied by the employment of a mould, in the manner described and shown in our prior patent 1121 896; or, if the sealing material is applied only to the longitudinal edges of the assembly, the assembly of pleats can be produced with the sealing strips thereon in a continuous process, as hereinbefore described.
Figure 2 shows the assembly 1 formed into tubular forms, the ends of the assembly being sealed to each other, as by adhesive, at 5.
Figure 3 is similar to Figure 2, but with the panel-form assembly 1 curved in the opposite direction so that the sealing material 4 forms a ring at the outer periphery of the element, instead of at the inner periphery as in the elements of Figure 2.
Claims (8)
1. A method of making hollow cylindrical filter elements comprises applying adhesive to each lon gitudinai edge portion of one face of a strip of sheet filter material; folding the strip in zig-zag fashion about a series of spaced transverse fold lines to form an assembly of an assembly of a series of pleats the ends of each of which are individually sealed by the apposition of said adhesive on the two parts of each pleat; at opposite edges of the assembly, applying a continuous strip of elastomeric sealing material along those portions of said one face of the strip which form the junctions between adjacent sealed pleat ends, so that said sealing strip also overlies the sealed pleat ends immediately adjacent said junctions; folding the assembly of pleats into tubular form; and joining the two ends of the assembly and the ends of the sealing strips to each other to form a cylindrical filter element with seal rings on each end thereof.
2. A filter element comprising a strip of sheet filter material with adhesive applied to each longitudinal edge portion of one face of said strip, said strip being folded in zig-zag fashion about a series of spaced transverse fold lines to form an assembly of a series of pleats the ends of each of which are individually sealed by the opposition of the adhesive on the two parts of each pleat, said assembly of pleats being folded into tubular form and the two ends of the assembly being joined together, each end of said tubular assembly having adhesively secured to those portions of said one face of the strip which form the junctions between adjacent sealed pleat ends, a strip of elastomeric sealing material which also overlies the sealed pleat ends immediately adjacent said junctions, the ends of said sealing strip being co-terminous with the ends of said assembly of pleats and the two ends of each said sealing strip being secured to each other.
3. A filter element according to claim 2, in which the two ends of the sealing strip are brought into sealing abutment with each other by the end-wise compression applied by joining the two ends of the assembly together;
4. A filter element according to claim 2 or 3, in which the two ends of the sealing strips are secured with adhesive.
5. A method of making hollow cylindrical filter elements, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings.
6. A method of making hollow cylindrical filter elements, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings.
6. A method of making hollow cylindrical filter elements, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figure 2 of the accompanying drawings.
7. A method of making hollow cylindrical filter elements, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figure 3 of the accompanying drawings.
8. Filter elements made according to any of claims 1, 5, 6, or 7.
