Abstract

203,033. Baker, W. S. Graff-. May 29, 1922. Moving stairways.-In escalators of the kind in which the steps have four wheels, two wheels only, one at each side of a step, travel upon an inclined track at a time. The inner wheels c are mounted at the end of arms d bolted to the underside of the step frame and provided with bearings for the axles e of the outer wheels b. On the upward run the axle e of any step rests on the arm d of the step immediately above and the wheels c run on a track f. The axle engages a hook d<3> formed on the arm when the driving chain breaks. On the return run the wheels b run on a track g and the arms rest on the axles of the next step above. Lugs d<1> formed on the inner side of the arms bear against the hooks d<3> of the next step when the wheels are travelling on the arcuate tracks f<2>, f<3> at the ends of the escalator. Auxiliary tracks are provided for the previously disused wheels where the steps change from a stairway to a platform.
