Abstract
202,958. Ward Leonard Electric Co., (Assignees of Bullinger, F. H.). Aug. 24, 1922, [Convention date]. Wire and ribbon resistances, cored and embedded.-A terminal for a resistance unit comprising a round or a tubular support and covered with vitreous enamel or like coating is provided with an outwardly extending portion bent on itself and reinforced by a collar. Fig. 5 shows the terminal which is preferably stamped from sheet copper, before being connected to the unit. The strip is first folded upon itself along the line 6 and the two arms are then bent approximately at right angles along the lines 11. Figs. 3 and 4 show opposite sides of the completed unit with terminals 4 secured to the unit by having their ends twisted together as at 18. A collar 9 preferably of steel having lugs 10 is provided to strengthen the portion projecting at right angles to the unit. Small resistance wire 3 is connected to the terminal by being twisted round a projection 12 which is then bent over on to the strip and pressed flat. Large braided wire 2 is divided longitudinally so as to pass over a rivet 15 and is secured by means of a cup-shaped washer 16. The strip is dished slightly round the hole 5 so that the rivet is held firmly by its head, between the strip and the tubular support. Projections 13, 13<1> and 15<a>, 15<b> act as guides for the conductors 3 and 2, respectively, and the edges of the strip are serrated in order to enable the insulating material with which the unit is finally covered to attach the strip more securely to the support. Connection is made with an external circuit by means of a screw or bolt passed through the holes 5, 5<1>.
