Abstract

An envelope blank 1 comprises panels 3, 4 joined by a transverse strip 9, 10 and preferably a third panel 2 joined to panel 3 by a fold line 21. A row 14, 15 of perforations extends along each edge of the strip 9, 10 and a fold line extends therein between and parallel to the rows 14, 15 of perforations. The panel 4 carries a form having an area for the recipient's address which is visible through a window 5 in the panel 3 when the blank is folded. A U-shaped surround 6, 7, 8 is joined to the panels 2, 3, 4 by rows 11, 12, 13 of perforations and has strips 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 of glue to secure the blank in the folded condition. In the folded condition the panel 4 overlies the panel 3 and the panel 2 overlies the panel 4. When the surround is removed to open the envelope so formed the transverse strip 9, 10, which is secured to part 8 of the surround, is removed therewith thereby separating the panel 4 carrying the form. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Envelope Blank and Envelope Formed therefrom The present invention relates to an envelope blank and to an envelope formed therefrom.
A known envelope blank described in British Patent Application No. 1555140 Serial 41783/76 comprises two halves separated by a row of perforations. The halves are surrounded by a surround defined by rows of perforations extending along the peripheral edges of the halves. One half of the blank is provided with a window and the other half has a form, such as a post office giroform, a bank giro form, or a salary specification, thereon. An area of the form is arranged to receive the address of the recipient and this area is visible through the window when the blank is folded. The surround is provided with adhesive. Thus, when the blank is folded the surround secures the two halves to form a sealed envelope. The recipient of the envelope simply tears off the surround to release the two halves. It is then only necessary to separate the two halves along the row of perforations to release the form.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an envelope blank that enables the form to be immediately released when the envelope formed from the blank is opened.
According to the present invention there is provided an envelope blank comprising a first panel having a transparent window, a second panel having an area for the reception of the address of the recipient, and a transverse strip arranged between said first and second panels, a first row of perforations joining one longitudinal edge of the transverse strip to the first panel and a second row of perforations joining the other longitudinal edge of the transverse strip to the second panel, wherein a fold line extends along the transverse strip intermediate of and parallel to the first and second rows of perforations so that the first panel can be folded over the second panel such that the area of the second panel is visible through the window, and further comprising a surround enclosing a part of the two panels and being joined to the panels by rows of perforations, one or more strips of glue being provided on the surround for securing the panels in their folded position.
In an embodiment, the surround is arranged such that the sealed envelope is surrounded on all four sides by the surround. If this surround is torn off, the two panels are immediately released, one of these panels comprising the form.
In a further embodiment, a third panel is joined by a transverse fold line to one of the panels at the edge thereof spaced from the transverse strip, and the surround is substantially U-shaped and extends along the longitudinal edges of all three panels at each side of the blank and along the transverse edge of the third panel. Where the third panel is joined to the first panel, the blank is folded first about the fold line of the transverse strip so that the second panel liens on the first panel. The third panel is then folded about the fold line along its edge to lie over the first and second panels. The strips of glue on the surround secure the envelope so formed. The closed envelope is thus provided with a surround on three sides. If this is removed two separate parts are obtained, namely, the form on the second panel and three joined first and third panels.
An embodiment of the present invention will hereinafter be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a plan view of an envelope blank of the present invention, Figure 2 shows an envelope formed from the blank of Figure 1 in a partly closed condition, Figure 3 shows the envelopes of Figure 2 in the closed position, and Figures 4, 5 and 6 show the envelope after opening, illustrating the parts released.
A plan view of an envelope blank 1 is illustrated in Figure 1. The blank has three panels 2, 3 and 4 of which the lower panel 4 is provided with a post office giro form. Of course, any other form, such as a bank giro form or a pay sheet, may be marked on the panel 4 as required. The intermediate panel 3 s provided with a window 5 which is covered by a transparent material such as a plastics material. The two panels 2 and 3 are separated transversely by a transverse fold line 21. The panels 3 and 4 are separated transversely by a transverse strip 9, 10 which is divided transversely into two halves by a transverse fold line. The transverse strip 9, 10 is defined between two transverse rows 14 and 1 5 of perforations, the row 14 of perforations extending along the lower transverse edge of the panel 3 and the row 1 5 of perforations extending along the upper transverse edge of the panel 4.
The three panels 2, 3, and 4 are enclosed by a substantially U-shaped surround having two longitudinally extending strips 6 and 7 and a transverse stnp 8. Each longitudinal strip 6 and 7 extends along the length of the longitudinal edges of the panels at a respective side of the blank and the transverse strip 8 extends along the upper transverse edge of the panel 2. The surround is separated from the panels by rows of perforations. Thus, the longitudinal strips 6 and 7 extend respectively outside longitudinal rows 11 and 12 of perforations whilst the transverse strip 8 extends outside a transverse row 1 3 of perforations.
Each of the longitudinal strips 6 and 7 of the surround is provided with a respective one of two longitudinal strips 16 and 1 7 of glue close to the longitudinal edges of the lower panel 4. Similarly, a respective one of two longitudinal strips 1 8 and 1 9 of glue is provided on each of the longitudinal strips 6 and 7 close to the longitudinal edges of the upper panel 2. In addition, a transverse strip 20 of glue extends along the transverse strip 8 of the surround.
To illustrate the use of the envelope let it be assumed that someone wishes to send an invoice to a customer. The user fills in the necessary data on the form provided on the panel 4 including the customer's name and address. The blank 1 is then folded as illustrated in Figure 2 to form a sealed envelope. The first fold is made along the transverse fold line dividing the transverse strip 9, 10. The panel 4 is thus brought into contact with the intermediate panel 3 and the customer's address on the form is visible through the window 5. Then, the blank is folded about fold line 21 so that the upper panel 2 is brought into contact with the back of the lower panel 4.
When the first fold is made to bring the lower panel 4 into contact with the panel 3, the two strips 16 and 17 of glude adhere the panel 4 to the panel 3. The panel 2 is then adhered to the back of panel 4 by strips 18, 19 and 20 of glue.
The sealed envelope is illustrated in Figure 3. It will be appreciated that in the sealed envelope the three panels 2, 3 and 4 are arranged on top of each other. In addition, the three parts of the longitudinal strip 6 of the surround are arranged nn top uf each other and adhered to each other.
The three parts of the longitudinal strip 7 are similarly arranged and adhered. The two halves 9 and 10 of the transverse strip 9, 10 are arranged on top of each other but are not adhered. The transverse strip 20 of glue adheres the transverse strip 8 to the back of the half 10 of the transverse strip 9, 10. The envelope is thus completely sealed.
To open the envelope, the recipient tears off the U-shped strip formed upon sealing and shown in Figure 3 along the rows 1 1, 12 and 14 of perforations to obtain the part shown in Figure 6.
This removes the whole of the U-shaped surround and the transverse strip 9, 10 so that the panel 4 is automatically separated from the panels 2 and 3 as illustrated in Figures 4 and 5. The recipient is thus immediately presented with the post office giro from on the panel 4 ready for use at the post office.
