Abstract
202,839. Lembeke, C. C. H., and Poths, F. J. Aug. 18, 1922. Riveting.-Relates to holders-up and comprises a construction in two parts separated by a spring which can be compressed by a lever-actuated cam so that the two parts have a metal-to-metal contact when the riveting operation is started. As the head of the rivet cools and contracts, however, the two parts are separated by the spring so that during the later part of the riveting operation the resistance is an elastic one. In the device shown the die 13 for the rivet head is held in the tubular upper end of a part 7 in which is a diaphragm 10 separating the bores 8, 9. In the bore 8 is the upper end of a spindle 1, which is slotted at 2 and has a telescopic extension 28 engaging the abutment 30. The lower end of the part 7 is flanged outwardly at 7a and surrounding it is a sleeve 4 to which is screwed a ring 5 carrying a crossbar 3 passing through the slot 2. Pivoted in the. slot is a cam 14 having a lower extension 17 provided with a spring pawl 20 which engages a toothed segment on the spindle 1 to lock the cam in any desired position. After the rivet has been inserted the cam is rotated to place the parts in the positions shown in Fig. 2 in which the flange 7<a> abuts on the ring 5 to give a solid hold-up. As the rivet-head cools and contracts the parts 7<a> and 5 are separated by the spring 12 so that the hold-up is a yielding one during the finish of the riveting operation.
