Cooking-stoves; dampers ; ovens.-An oven to be heated by a gas burner, lamp, &c. beneath it comprises an open-ended vertical flue 13 extending up one side of the oven, with the interior of which it communicates by a port 30 near the top; an horizontal flue 15 below the oven, opening at one end to the interior of the oven and at the other to the vertical flue 13 by a port 14; an horizontal flue 28 at the top of the oven, with outlets 29 to the atmosphere and ports 31, 32 leading to the flue 13; and adjustable dampers controlling the vertical flue and the ports by which it communicates with the horizontal flues. In the oven shown, a sliding damper consisting of a right-angled plate 21, 22 is provided with ports 24 controlling ports 25 in a plate 26 extending across the flue 13, and with a port or ports- 23 co-operating with the ports 14. A similar damper, shown separately in Fig. 3, has ports- 38, 39, 40, 41 co-operating with a port 34 in a plate 33 which closes the top of the flue, and with the ports 30, 31, 32. By suitably adjusting the two dampers, the gases from a burner &c. placed beneath the flue 13 may be caused to pass through the bottom flue 15 to the oven, and thence either by way of the top flue 28 or by the ports 30 and 34 to the atmosphere; or up the flue 13 and along the flue 28, in order to heat the back and top walls only; or directly up the flue 13. A stand 35 for utensils is provided at the top of the flue 13. A damper 45 is shown, which is operated through a rod 46 by means of a catch 48 on the oven door, so as to close the port 30 when the door is open and prevent an inrush of cold air. The oven door, which is hinged at the lower edge, may have attached to it a strut or stand so that it may form a shelf when open. The oven shelves 49 preferably have perforations 50 at their edges to allow the gases to circulate.
