Abstract

A master cylinder and reservoir assembly comprises a reservoir (5) sealingly secured to a master cylinder body. To obviate the use as piston stops of spring clips within the master cylinder bore or of pegs extending through the master cylinder body, the reservoir (5) has a spigot (6) which extends into the bore (2) through an aperture in the master cylinder body and serves both to locate the reservoir on the master cylinder (1) and as a stop for a piston (3). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Master cylinders This invention relates generally to master cylinder and reservoir assemblies.
In known assemblies rearward movement of the piston is limited by a stop which may be in the form of a spring clip fitted in the master cylinder bore or a peg extending through the wall of the master cylinder into the bore. Such known assemblies have the disadvantage that an element, either the peg or circlip, is required and steps are required in manufacture to form the hole for the peg or a circumferential groove for the spring clip and in assembly to locate the peg or circlip after the piston is inserted in the bore.
The present invention aims to overcome that disadvantage and provides a master cylinder and reservoir assembly in which the reservoir has a depending spigot extending from the lower surface of the reservoir and protruding through an aperture in the wall of the master cylinder into the bore, the spigot providing a stop engageable by a piston slidably in the bore.
Preferably, the spigot is hollow and commu nicates 'the reservoir with the master cylinder bore.
The illustrated assembly is for use with a vehicle dual circuit braking system and comprises the master cylinder 1 having a bore 2 within which two pistons 3 are slidable, the pistons being biased rearwardly by respective springs 4.
A master cylinder and reservoir assembly in accordance with the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows the master cylinder in axial cross-section and the reservoir partly in section.
The illustrated assembly is for use with a vehicle dual circuit braking system and comprises the master cylinder 1 having a bore 2 within which two pistons 3 are slidable, the pistons being biased rearwardly by respective springs 4.
The reservoir 5 is of plastics material and has two depending spigots 6 extending from the bottom of the reservoir through corresponding apertures in the wall of the cylinder 1 and into the cylinder bore 2. The spigots 6 provide stops to limit rearward movement of the respective pistons 3. In the illustrated assembly the spigots 6 are hollow to provide fluid communication between the reservoir 5 and the bore 2.
To assemble the reservoir on the master cylinder, the pistons are pushed forwardly and the spigots simply pushed into the apertures in the cylinder wall, the spigots being a close fit in the apertures. The pistons are then released and adopt the illustrated positions.
It will be seen that the spigots 6 serve three purposes, namely to locate the reservoir 5 on the master cylinder 1, to provide fluid communication between the reservoir and the cylinder bore, and to act as stops for the pistons.
The spigots 6 may be integrally moulded with the reservoir, as illustrated, or they may be separate members attached to the bottom of the reservoir. The spigots may, for example, be of metal and moulded into the bottom surface of the reservoir for use with master cylinders where a more robust piston stop is required.
1. A master cylinder and reservoir assembly in which the reservoir has a depending spigot extending from the lower surface of the reservoir and protruding through an aperture in the wall of the master cylinder into the bore, the spigot providing a stop engageable by a piston slidable in the bore.
2. An assembly according to claim 1, wherein the spigot is hollow and communicates the reservoir with the master cylinder bore.
3. An assembly according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the spigot is a close fit in the aperture in the master cylinder wall.
4. An assembly according to any of claims 1 to 3, wherein the spigot is integral with the reservoir.
5. An assembly according to any of claims 1 to 4, wherein the spigot is one of a plurality of spigots, one for each piston slidable in the bore.
6. A master cylinder and reservoir assembly constructed and arranged substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
