Description

SPECIFICATION Attaching and detaching arrangement of front end for centrifugal casting metal mould The present invention relates to an attaching and detaching arrangement of a front end plate or cap to and from one end or spigot portion of a metal mould for use in centrifugal casting.
Generally, in the centrifugal casting of metal, especially that of metal tubing or pipes and the like, there is employed a metal mould or die which normally comprises a hollow cylindrical main body, a front end plate or cap releasably fitted into one end or spigot portion of the main body, and a rear end plate or cap fitted the other end of the main body and having a central opening smaller in diameter than the internal diameter of the main body for preventing molten metal from running out of such rear end plate during casting.Molten metal is poured into the mould main body rotated by suitable means at high speeds, via a spout which is inserted in to the main body through the central opening in the rear end plate, for being distributed evenly over the entire inner surface of the main body to produce a hollow cylindrical or tubular casting product as required through centrifugal force.
In the process of the centrifugal casting as described above, it is necessary to attach and detach the front end plate to and from the spigot portion of the metal mould main body at each casting. For effecting such attaching and detaching of the front end plate automatically, there has been conventionally proposed an arrangement wherein an arm to which the front end plate is secured is selectively advanced and retracted with respect to the metal mould, while said arm is further arranged to be subjected to rocking motion vertically to facilitate withdrawal of the cast product from the metal mould.
The known arrangement is described above, however, has such disadvantages that since replacement of such front end plate must inevitably be effected in the vicinity of the metal mould which is at high temperature, the replacement work is made extremely dangerous and difficult, with a tendency that the fixing of the front end plate to the arm is liable to be insecure and unstable and that the operation cycle of the casting machine is undesirably prolonged.Furthermore, in the conventional arrangement as described above, it is rather hard to ensure whether the portion of the arm to which the front end plate is to be fixed is sufficiently cleaned or not, and from this aspect also, the fixing of the front end plate to the arm is likely to be insecure, with consequent incorrect fitting of the front end plate into the spigot portion of the metal mould, thus resulting in the generation of faulty products in some cases, especially in the case where pipes having large diameters are to be cast.
Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to provide an attaching and detaching arrangement of a front end plate to and from spigot portion of a metal mould for use in centrifugal casting which is capable of automatically attaching and detaching the front end plate with respect to the metal mould correctly in an efficient manner with safety.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an attaching and detaching arrangement of the above described type in which replacement of the front end plate with respect to the attaching and detaching arrangement is efficiently and positively effected, with substantial elimination of disadvantages inherent in the conventional arrangements of the kind.
A further object of the present invention is to provide an attaching and detaching arrangement of the above described type which is simple in construction and reliable in functioning and can be incorporated into various types of centrifugal casting machines at low cost.
According to the present invention there is provided an attaching and detaching apparatus of a front end plate to and from a metal mould for use in centrifugal casting, said attaching and detaching arrangement comprising a cam shaft arranged in a direction substantially parallel to an axis of the metal mould for axial movement and rotation of said cam shaft, a pivotal arm secured, at one end thereof, to corresponding one end of said cam shaft to radially outwardly extend from said cam shaft, a fixing head which is coupled to the other end of said pivotal arm and on which the front end plate engageable with the metal mould is releasably fixed, and a cam mechanism for rotating said cam shaft through the axial movement of said cam shaft, said fixing head including a fixing head body and a front end plate fixing member rotatably mounted on said fixing head body for rotation about an axis intersecting substantially at right angles with the axial direction of said pivotal arm.
According to a preferred embodiment, the fixing head body is rotatable about the axis of the pivotal arm and the pivotal arm is provided with driving means for causing the fixing head body to rotate. By the arrangement as described above, not only the attaching and detaching of the front end plate to and from the metal mould is facilitated, but replacement of the front end plate with respect to the attaching and detaching arrangement is positively effected with safety in an efficient manner.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a top plan view, partly in section, showing a construction of an attaching and detaching arrangement of a front end plate of a preferred embodiment of the present invention, Figure 2 is a fragmentary side elevational view, partly in section, of a cam housing employed in the arrangement of Fig. 1, Figure 3 is a fragmentary side elevational view, partly in section, of a pivotal arm employed in the arrangement of Fig. 1, Figure 4 is a top plan view, on an enlarged scale, of the pivotal arm of Fig. 3, Figure 5 is a cross section taken along the line V-V of Fig. 4, Figure 6 is a side elevational view of a fixing head for the front end plate coupled to the pivotal arm of Fig. 4, and Figures 7(A) and 7(B) are schematic diagrams explanatory of functioning of the attaching and detaching arrangement of Fig. 1.
There is shown in Fig. 1 an attaching and detaching arrangement 4 of a preferred embodiment of the present invention which is arranged to selectively attach and detach a front end plate 2 automatically to and from a spigot end 1 a formed at one end of a main body 1 of a metal mould which is to be rotated at high speeds by suitable means (not shown) for effecting centrifugal casting in a known manner. the attaching and detaching arrangement 4 generally includes a cam shaft 5 arranged in a direction substantially parallel to an axis of the main body 1 of the metal mould, a pivotal arm 6 connected at its one end to a corresponding end 5a of the cam shaft 5, substantially at right angles with respect to the latter, to extend radially outwardly from said cam shaft, and a fixing head 7 provided at the other end of the pivotal arm 6 on which fixing head the front end plate 2 is fixed. The cam shaft 5 reciprocatingly and rotatably extending through a cam housing 9 which is secured, for example, to a frame 8 of a casting carriage (not shown), has a cam roller 10 (Fig. 2) rotatably mounted on a portion of said cam shaft 5 within said cam housing 9 and engaging a cam face 9a formed in the cam housing 9 to define an edge face in the circumferential direction of said cam housing 9, while the other end Sb of the cam shaft 5 is coupled to a reciprocating type actuator, for example, a solenoid 11 fixed to the frame 8 for reciprocation of said cam shaft 5.The cam face 9a is formed, at its one side remote from the pivotal arm 6, to be substantially parallel to the axis of the cam shaft 5, and extends in a spiral configuration from its central portion toward the other side thereof, thus a cam mechanism 1 6 being constituted by the cam housing 9 and cam roller 10.Accordingly, as the cam shaft 5 is advanced or retracted by the actuator 11, said cam shaft 5 is rotated by the cam mechanism 16 to bring the pivotal arm 6 from an attaching portion A (i.e., the position shown by solid lines in Figs. 1 and 3) to a detaching position B (i.e., the position shown by a chain line in Fig. 3) for the front end plate 2, or vice versa, and thus upon rotation of the pivotal arm 6 to the detaching or retracted position B together with the front end plate 2, it is possible to withdraw a cast product 3 (Fig.1) from out of the main body 1 of the metal mould. On the other hand, the pivotal arm 6 further comprises an arm body 12 of cylindrical configuration, a sleeve member 14 slidably received in said arm body 1 2 through a sleeve bearing 13, and an arm shaft 1 7 received for mere rotation in the sleeve member 14 through bearings 1 5 provided at one end 1 4a and the other end of said sleeve member 1 4 as is most clearly seen from Fig. 3. The fixing head 7 comprises a fixing head body 1 8 secured to one end of the arm shaft 1 7 and is arranged to be rotatable about the axis of the pivotal arm 6.The other end of the arm shaft 1 7 remote from the fixing head 7 is coupled only for rotation of the shaft 1 7 to a driving unit, for example, a rotary actuator 1 9 provided at a base end portion 1 2a of the arm body 1 2.It should be noted that the arm body 1 2 is rotatably engaged with the end 5a of the cam shaft 5, while a U shaped bracket 20 extends from the outer periphery of the end portion 5a of the cam shaft 5 to substantially surround the corresponding end portion 1 2a of the arm body 1 2 of the pivotal arm 6 for adjusting and setting the fixing angle of the arm body 1 2 with respect to the cam shaft 5 by machine bolts 21 threaded into opposite sides of the bracket 20. Meanwhile, as shown in Fig.
4, an engaging member 22 extending outwardly from the end portion 1 4a of the sleeve member 14 slidably engages a groove of a grooved member 23 provided at an outer periphery of the arm body 12, thereby to prevent rotation of the sleeve member 14 with respect to the arm body 1 2. The engaging member 22 is further provided with an adjusting screw 25 which engages a corresponding flange portion 24 extending outwardly from the outer periphery of the arm body 12, and by turning a nut 26 engaging the screw 25, the advancing and retracting position of the sleeve member 14 with respect to the arm body 1 2 is adjusted to be fixed.
The engaging member 22 also serves as a stopper for restricting the range of rotation of the fixing head 7, and a contact projection 28 which is engageable with the engaging member 22 and a stopper member 27 provided at a different angular position on the sleeve member 14 extends outwardly from the fixing head body 1 8 of the fixing head 7 as shown in Fig. 4. The engaging member 22 is further provided with another adjusting bolt 29 (Figs.
5 and 6) threaded therein for engagement with the contact projection 28 of the fixing head body 1 8 so as to adjust the position of the fixing head 7 with respect to the main body 1 of the metal mould. The fixing head 7, having the fixing head body 18, is provided with a front end plate fixing member 30 rotatably mounted on the body 1 8 thOugh radial and thrust bearings (not shown), with the front end plate fixing member 30 being adapted to be rotatable about an axis intersecting substantially at right angles with the axis of the pivotal arm 6. The front end plate fixing member 30 includes a shaft 31 and a fixing plate 32 secured to the shaft 31 for releasably mounting thereon the front end plate 2 (Figs. 1 and 4).
By the above arrangement, the centrifugal casting employing the metal mould, is carried out under the state in which the front end plate 2 is fitted into the spigot portion 1 a of the metal mould main body 1, with the front end plate 2 being pressed against the metal mould main body 1 by the attaching and detaching arrangement 4 of the present invention. Therefore, during the centrifugal casting, the front end plate fixing member 30 rotates following rotation of the metal mould main body 1 at high speeds.Upon completion of the casting, for detaching the front end plate 2 from the spigot portion 1 a of the main body 1, the cam shaft 5 is advanced or extended by the reciprocating type actuator 11, in which case, the cam shaft 5 is first advanced substantially straight due to contact of the cam roller 10 with the cam surface 9 a of the cam housing 9, and is subsequently rotated after the front end plate 2 has been spaced from the spigot portion 1 a as the cam roller 10 rolls along the spigot portion of the cam surface 9ato bring the pivotal arm 6 upward from the attaching position A to the detaching or retracted position B shown in Fig. 3.Upon arrival of the pivotal arm 6 at the detaching position B, the fixing head 7 is rotated through 180 by the action of the rotary actuator 1 9 (Figs. 3 and 4) to bring the front end plate 2 from the side facing the spigot portion 1 a (Fig. 7(A)) to opposite side remote from the spigot portion 1 a (Fig. 7(B)). It is to be noted here that before the rotation through 180 as described above, the fixing head 7 is positioned and maintained thereat by the engagement of the contact member 28 with the engaging member 22, while after said rotation, the fixing head 7 is held in position by the engagement of the contact member 28 with the stopper member 27.After the rotation of the fixing head 7 in the above described manner, replacement of the front end cap 2 is effected with respect to the fixing plate 32, and by the operation in the reverse order to the above, a new front end cap 2 is fitted into the spigot portion 1 a for subsequent casting operation.
It should be noted here that in the attaching and detaching arrangement according to the present invention, since the replacement of the front end plate 2 can be effected in a large space remote from the metal mould main body 1 at high temperature, through rotation of the fixing head 7, the removal or fixing of the front end plate 2 with respect to the fixing plate 32 is readily effected with safety, while the fixing plate 32 is easily checked for the presence of any remaining foreign matters, with the front end plate 2 being positively secured to the fixing plate 32, and consequently the front end plate 2 is accurately fitted into the spigot portion 1 a of the metal mould main body 1 to prevent generation of faulty products. Moreover, since the front end plate 2 may be readily and quickly mounted on the fixing plate 32, the operation cycle of the centrifugal casting machine may be advantageously shortened.
When the fixing head 7 is to be rotated back toward the metal mould main body 1 after mounting a fresh front end plate 2 on the fixing plate 32, if the fixing head 7 is held in position to be directed upward after rotation through approximately 20 to 160 instead of rotating said fixing head 7 completely through 180 , the front end plate 2 mounted on the fixing head 7 should neither fall off the fixing plate 7 nor contacts the metal mould main body 1 even if the casting carriage (not shown) is moved in the above state, thus making it possible to freely move such casting carriage to cope with alterations in the casting cycle.
It should also be noted here that the rotary type actuator 1 9 described as employed for rotating the fixing head 7 in the foregoing embodiment may be replaced by a reciprocating type actuator for rotation of said fixing head 7, for example, through a lever member disposed at the end portion of the arm shaft 17.
As may be clear from the foregoing description, since the fixing head for the front end plate is arranged to be rotated with respect to the metal mould, the replacement of the front end plate for the fixing head can be readily and positively effected with safety, with consequent correct fitting of the front end plate into the metal mould, thus the possibility of the generation of a faulty product is advantageously reduced.
Although the present invention has been described by way of example with reference to the attached drawings, it is to be noted that various changes and modifications are apparent to those skilled in the art. For example, the driving means for causing the fixing head body to rotate may be a reciprocating type actuator coupled to the fixing head body through an arm shaft and lever means.
