1405030 Gear hob spindles; spindle mountings MACHINE TOOL DIVISIONAL SERVICES Ltd 6 Nov 1974 [12 Nov 1973] 52331/73 Headings B3K and B3B In a gear hobbing machine means is provided to permit the removal and replacement of the gear hob without affecting the accuracy of alignment and subsequent rigidity of the hobbing spindle, the means comprising a removable bearing assembly including a housing 7 securable to the machine frame 1, a bearing sleeve 9 mounted in roller bearings 8 within the housing, a part tapered collet member located within the sleeve 9 and which in the operative position is located around the hobbing spindle between the bearing sleeve 9 and the spindle end 30. Radial play of the bearings 8 is taken up by a nut 10 on the bearing sleeve and the collet is urged by its tapered region into gripping relationship with the spindle end 30 by way of the threaded plug 12 and dished springs 14. Coaxial with the bearing sleeve and collet in the end 15 of the housing there is provided a threaded bolt member 16, 17 which can be rotated so as to engage the end of the threaded plug 12 to effect release of the dished spring pressure and hence the release of the collet 11 from the spindle end 30. The bearing assembly is then release from the frame 1 and from the spindle to facilitate the release of the hob 6. The inner end 18 of the bearing housing 7 is provided with a sealing ring 19 which surrounds the spindle end when in operation, and a cover-plate 20 biased by a spring 22 moves along within the collet as the bearing is removed from the spindle to cover the opening in the bearing housing and hence prevents the ingress of dirt.
