Abstract

A device for turning sheets (15) in a folding machine includes first and second twisted endless belts (2, 3) guided around the diagonally opposed rollers of respective pairs of rollers (5, 6). A sheet gripped between the belts at one end is carried by them and is turned. Guide rails (7), which are arranged in the notional turning plane, maintain the stability of the sheet being turned. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Sheet Turning Device The present invention relates to a device for turning sheets on folding machines and the like, by which the sheets after the delivery from one folding mechanism are fed turned to a further folding mechanism or a succeeding processing unit.
Folding machines are known, in which one or more cross folds are performed on sheets in such a manner that the delivered folded sheets are fed by means of a corner conveying table to one or more folding mechanisms. In that case, a long working path, which is determined by the distance from the sheet feeder to the sheet delivery, inevitably arises for the operating person.
Thereby, a large area is needed for a folding machine of that kind.
Turning devices were created to counteract these disadvantages. Thus, a turning device is known in which the folded sheets are turned in sheet running direction and into another plane.
The turning drums used for this area arranged in the conveying path between two conveying units.
The turning drum has a large space requirement, since its diameter must be kept large to avoid deformations of the conveyed folded sheets, such as for example markings or creases over the closed folded edges. The turning device with the turning drum is also extremely expensive in material and costs, since it must be constructed as a large driveable unit. The re-equipping of the machine, i.e. mounting and removal of the turning device or mounting and removal of the conveying means, which must be used in their place, is timeconsuming. Finally, the necessary long sheet transport paths lead to an increased fault susceptibility of the entire machine.
Although turning devices of that kind, in which the turning of the sheets takes place transversely to the sheet running direction, have the consequence of an appreciable reduction of the operating area of the respective machine, they do however not permit an optimal structuring of both areas, since a variation of the extent of such devices is not possible.
The object of the present invention is to create a turning device, by which the operating area can be optimised in correspondence with the requirements of the machine, the technical effort is reduced to a minimum, and the sheets can be turned without the necessity of changing their direction of motion.
According to the present invention there is provided a device for turning sheets in folding machines, the device comprising two pairs of rollers, one pair arranged to receive sheets therebetween, the other pair arranged to deliver turned sheets, two twisted endless belts arranged contiguously along a substantial portion of their mutually facing runs and each rotating around one roller of one pair of rollers and the diagonally opposed roller of the other pair of rollers, means for driving the belts in contra-rotating manner and one or more guide rails on each side of the belts and arranged in the notional turning plane so as to stabilise a sheet being turned. To secure a universal applicability of the device, the two belts can be arranged to be displaceable so that the sheets can be turned through up to 1800, wherein it is advantageous to construct the device to be axially rotatable so that the device may be adapted to every take-over position determined by the respective machine. The device can be provided with a preferably regulable drive so that also its independent use as transport means is possible. In order to make possible the adaptation of the subject of the invention to the most diverse constructions of folding machines, it is expedient to construct the turning device so that it is displaceable in height and the belt drive is displaceable laterally.
This means that the operating areas of folding machines or the like can now be optimised in such a manner that by a change in the lengths of the belts, the working path for the operating person, i.e. the distance from sheet feeder to sheet delivery, is kept as small as possible.
Furthermore, turning the sheets without changing their direction of motion, thus without interruption of their flow of motion, is possible so that an easier flow of the course of this operating step is guaranteed. Deformation of the folded sheets and creases, for example across their closed folded edge, are excluded through this turning principle, while the space hitherto required for turning drums or similar functional groups can be utilised otherwise.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be more particularly described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a perspective illustration of a turning device embodying the present invention, Fig. 2 is a perspective illustration of the principle of turning the folded sheet and Fig. 3 is a schematic illustration of the arrangement of a pocket folding machine using the turning device.
Referring now to the drawings, the turning device 1 includes a first belt 2 and a second belt 3, which are guided centrally on rollers 5 rotatable by a drive means 4 and serving for seizing the sheets, and on rollers 6 serving for the sheet transfer to the following unit. There is on each side at least one guide rail 7, illustrated in the drawing only by their starting points. The course of these-guide rails 7 corresponds to that of the notional sheet turning plane.
The schematic illustration of the arrangement of a pocket folding machine in Fig. 3 shows the incorporation of the turning device 1, whereby its influence on the optimal structuring of the operating area 8 and thereby also of the total area 9 of the folding machine becomes clear.
The folded sheets 15 conveyed from a sheet feeder 10 across a first feed table 11 through a first folding mechanism 12 and across a first corner conveying table 1 3 through a second folding mechanism 14 are seized by the first and second belts 2 and 3 of the turning device 1 and axially turned by this as the belts 2 and 3 are twisted crosswise, and the folded sheet 15 slides laterally along on the guide rails 7. After turning is completed, the folded sheet 15 is deposited out of the turning device 1 onto a second corner conveying table 16 in the same plane as it was taken up and conveyed by this through a third folding mechanism 17 to a sheet delivery 18.
Since it is possible to vary the spacing of the rollers 5 and 6 relative to each other, and thus the length of the first and second belts 2 and 3, the operating area 8 and thereby the total area 9 of the folding machine is dimensioned in such a manner that they have an optimum size. Thereby, the constant operating path 19 is optimally small for the operating person.
