Abstract

The useful life of a fluorescent lamp having a first pair of electrodes (cathodes) (8), coated with electron emissive material, is increased by the provision of a pair of second electrodes (cathodes) (20), each electrode being carried by one of the mount assemblies (6) and connected to one of a pair of pins (10) or (26) projecting from a respective end cap. These second electrodes are orientated at right angles to the adjacent first electrodes (8) and are spaced by a distance greater than the distance between the first electrodes. When the first electrodes (8) cease to function properly, the operation of the lamp can be continued employing the hitherto unused second electrodes (20), for which the now spent first electrodes act as anode rings <IMAGE>
