Abstract

Measuring equipment for measuring the position of an elongate member such as an underground pipe or bore comprises two rigid arms 10, 12 interconnected by a universal joint 14; one of said arms including a planar surface 30 normal to the longitudinal axis of said one arm and the other arm carrying circumferentially spaced displacement transducers to bear on the planar surface. An inclinometer is fitted to the leading end of the assembly for measuring its rotation relative to gravity. Signals from the displacement transducers and the inclinometer are fed to a calculator enabling the equipment to determine the position of the pipe or bore relative to an initial reference position. <IMAGE>
