Abstract

A door closer comprising an arm which in use engages a door to urge it into its closed position. The arm is rotatable about an axis parallel to that of the door and urges it closed by spring means capable of exerting a greater torque on the arm when the door is at or near its closed position than when it is in an open position, the torque exerted being a function of the rotational position of the arm. In the embodiment shown the door closer comprises a bevel gear 1 secured to the arm which engages a rack 4 movable against the bias of the spring means. One end region 6 of the rack has teeth engageable with a portion of the bevel gear of a first, greater diameter so that the spring exerts the greater torque. The other end regions 5 of the rack has teeth engageable with a portion of the bevel gear of a second smaller diameter. In another embodiment a spiral cam and a cam follower is used, the cam follower being movable against the bias of the spring means to a position where a wider portion of the spiral cam engages the cam follower. <IMAGE>
