Abstract

A variable ratio steering gear comprises a bar member (1) mounted for longitudinal displacement in a housing, and a rack member in the form of a sector plate (3) having a circumferential rack (3b) and which is mounted in the housing for rotation about an axis concentric with the rack, a rotatably mounted pinion 4 or a rack being located in the housing to engage with the rack (3b) for rotating the sector plate (3). The sector plate (3) (or bar member 1) carries a pin follower (7) which co- operates with and is movable along a slotted track (6) carried by the bar member (1) (or sector plate 3). The track (6) and follower pin (7) co-operate with each other at a position remote from the axis about which the sector plate (3) rotates so that during rotation of the sector plate, relative displacement between the follower pin (7) and the track (6) causes the bar member (1) to be displaced longitudinally to provide an output. <IMAGE>
