Abstract
An electrode for use in an electrolytic reaction in an electrolytic cell, such as for the manufacture of chlorine, hypochlorites or (per)chlorates, or the production of organic compounds or the electrolysis of water, or cathodic protection systems, comprises a valve metal base, at least a portion of the exposed surface of which has a thin electronically conductive, electro- catalytic matrix coating having a thickness effective for conducting electrolysis, which coating, exclusive of any binder or modifier, is essentially amorphous and lacking in crystallinity detectable by X-ray diffraction analysis; and electrolytic processes employing such an electrode. The matrix coating may comprise a phase of at least one Group IIIa element and at least one Group Va element, eg, BP, In-Ga-Sb, Ga-As-P or In-As- Sb; or Groups II and VIa elements; or Groups II and IV with or without Va elements; or Groups II, V and VI elements; or Groups I, IIIa and VIa elements (excluding O); or Groups II, III, V and VI elements; or a chalcogenide glass, eg., Ge-P-Te; or an amorphous alloy, e.g., Ge-Te; or a metallic glass, e.g., Fe-Mo-B.
