Abstract

Coalescence of "secondary dispersion"-sized droplets (under 30 microns) of a first liquid dispersed in a second liquid is effected by feeding the dispersion to a mixing zone containing further first liquid, mixing the dispersion and the first liquid so that the droplets coalesce with the larger drops of first liquid, allowing the resulting "primary dispersion" to disengage under gravity, and recovering disengaged second liquid now depleted in "secondary dispersion"-sized droplets of the first liquid. Oil-in-water or water-in-oil dispersions are separated thus. In Fig. 1 the dispersion flows from the mixer to a separate coalescer-gravity separator unit, from which some first liquid is returned to the mixer. In Fig. 3 the heavy and light constituents separate by gravity alone into quiescent lower and upper zones of the mixer chamber, separated from the central mixing zone by baffles or coalescer pads.
