Abstract

A method of suppressing spark discharges from a surface liable to be or become negative charged, e.g. a photographic film, in which the surface is treated with an isopropylbenzene carrying a substituent with a Hammett sigma p constant of from -0.17 to +0.82 in the 2- or 4-position relative to the isopropyl group or a substituent with a Hammett sigma m constant of from 0.0 to 0.88 in the 3-position relative to the isopropyl group. The isopropylbenzene derivative preferably bears an anionic group in the para position which has a fluorinated organic anion which confers surfactant properties and ensures negative contact electrification of the surface. The compound is preferably applied in the gelatin top coat of a film. In Table 1, isopropylbenzene with only one substituent in the o or p positions are exemplified and in the example, isopropylbenzene or its peroxide are used.
