Abstract

202,174. Chew, L., and Jennings, W. F. Aug. 28, 1922. Valves, arrangement of.-In a compressor of the class described in Specification 137,225 and having ring valves, as described in Specifications 151,902 and 165,234, the valve housing is formed by the provision of a central and six surrounding cavities in a disc or plate secured to the piston or cover by the depending stems of the valve cover-plates which carry guides for the ring valves, the cover-plates being dodecagonal and locked in their housings by engagement with projections on the central dodecagonal coverplate, which is resiliently secured to the disc or plate so that it can be raised out of contact with the surrounding cover-plates to permit their removal. An expansible flanged cylinder is provided to hold and centre the valves for regrinding. Fig 1 shows valves housed in a plate 2 secured to the piston by the screwed stems 9 depending from the outer valve cover-plates 10. The stem of the central cover-plate 11 passes through the plate 2, and is secured by a nut 13 with an interposed spring 14 which allows lifting of the plate 11. The valves 5 cover holes 25 bv which the gas passes through the plate 2, making its way through rings of holes 22 formed in the coverplates and around their edges. A valve guide or boss 23 is provided beneath each cover-plate, this boss being reduced to the form of several projecting points by the borings 22, thus reducing friction. A fibre washer 35 is interposed batween the under side of the boss 23 and the plate 2. The cover-plates 10 are dodecagonal, as shown in Fig. 2, and the central cover-plate is formed with dodecagonal projections 15, the housing for this central plate being constituted by the triangular studs 7 left between the outer borings. The central cover-plate is formed with a screw stud 16, Fig. 1, which may be engaged by a tool 17 to lift the plate and turn it so that the projections 15 rest on the studs 7. In this position the outer cover-plates may be removed by engaging projections 21 on the tool in the holes 22. Fig. 3 shows means for reseating or grinding a valve in position, comprising a flanged split spring cylinder 26 on which the valve is placed after removal of the cover-plate, and which is expanded by a conical tool 28.
