Abstract

Ferric chloride is reduced by sulphur monochloride optionally in combination with sulphur or sulphur dichloride to produce ferrous chloride and sulphur dichloride. The sulphur monochloride may be introduced as a gas or as a liquid and the reaction is conveniently performed in a fluidised bed. The ferric chloride reduction may form part of a process for the recovery of chlorine values from iron chloride produced in the chlorination of a titaniferous or aluminous material.
